Steel and Cast Iron Baths
Explore steel and cast iron baths that are built to last a lifetime. Both feature an enamel coating that resists scratching, chipping, and chemical damage, with a non-porous surface that prevents bacterial build-up and makes cleaning simple. Heat retention is excellent across the range. Choose from classic clawfoot designs for a traditional look or contemporary floor-flush styles for a modern finish.
Steel and cast iron baths are both fantastic options due to their durability and unmatched finishes.
Steel baths are made from pressed steel coated with a durable enamel finish. They're lighter than their cast iron counterparts and more affordable, making them a practical choice for many homes. Steel enamel baths offer exceptional durability and a premium, glossy finish that resists scratches and staining far better than acrylic. The enamel coating is non-porous, making these metal baths hygienic and easy to clean.
Cast iron baths are crafted from molten iron poured into moulds before being enamelled. They're significantly heavier than steel bathtubs but hold heat longer, keeping your bathwater warmer throughout your soak. Cast iron bathtubs offer the same premium, glossy finish and superior scratch resistance as steel. The weight brings a substantial, quality feel that many prefer for traditional bathroom designs. They work particularly well in period properties, or anywhere you want that authentic vintage aesthetic.
Weight is the primary consideration. Cast iron baths can weigh over 100kg, requiring reinforced flooring in some homes. Steel bathtubs feel cold to the touch initially, though they warm quickly once filled. Both types are more expensive than acrylic alternatives and require careful installation to prevent chipping the enamel during delivery or fitting. However, their durability and premium finish often outweigh these drawbacks.
Metal bathtubs come in various configurations to suit different bathroom layouts and preferences.
Freestanding metal baths: Freestanding steel and iron baths are stunning centrepiece designs. These are often double-ended steel baths with central taps, perfect for creating a spa-like sanctuary in larger bathrooms.
Steel shower baths: Practical L-shaped or P-shaped designs that combine bathing and showering in one space, ideal for family bathrooms.
Cast iron slipper baths: Offer traditional raised-end designs in cast iron that provide comfortable back support and add Victorian charm to period properties.
Standard steel baths and cast iron bathtubs typically range from 1500mm to 1800mm in length. The most popular sizes are 1600 steel and iron baths, ideal for average-sized bathrooms, and 1700 steel and iron baths, which offer extra legroom. Width usually sits between 700mm and 800mm. Freestanding metal baths can vary more dramatically, with some double-ended models reaching 1800mm or beyond. Always check your bathroom dimensions and doorway widths before ordering, as these types of baths cannot be flexed during installation.
For steel enamel baths, look for a thickness between 2mm and 3mm. Thicker steel reduces flexing and feels more solid underfoot. Cast iron bathtubs typically range from 5mm to 8mm thick, with the enamel coating adding another 1mm or 2mm. Thicker walls provide better heat retention and a more substantial, premium feel, though they increase weight considerably.
A standard 1700mm cast iron bath typically weighs between 100kg and 150kg when empty. Larger freestanding models can exceed 180kg. Once filled with water and a bather, the total weight can reach 400kg. Therefore, floor strength must be verified before installation.
Steel bathtubs are considerably lighter. A standard 1700mm model typically weighs 25kg to 45kg. This makes them easier to manoeuvre during installation and suitable for most standard floor joists without requiring structural reinforcement, while still offering the benefits of an enamel bath.
Both cast iron and steel baths require gentle cleaning to protect the enamel surface. Use a soft cloth with warm water and mild washing-up liquid regularly and avoid abrasive scourers or harsh chemical cleaners, which can dull or scratch the enamel finish. For stubborn stains, a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water works brilliantly. Rinse thoroughly after each use. Dry with a soft towel to prevent water marks and maintain that glossy finish.
