What is a toilet and sink combination unit?

One run of furniture holding the basin, the toilet and cupboard space, with the cistern, supply pipes and waste all concealed inside. You gain the dead space that normally sits between a separate basin and WC, and you lose the visual clutter of exposed pipework. It also takes one decision off your hands, since the basin, unit and toilet already match.

What sizes do they come in?

Vanity sections come at 1050mm and 1100mm, and complete runs at 1300mm, 1400mm and 1500mm once storage is added alongside. Measure the wall you're fitting against, then check the projection into the room as well, because that's the measurement that decides whether the door still opens comfortably. What's the difference between the Oliver styles?

Four to choose between, and it's mostly about the door front. Shaker has the classic recessed panel, which suits period houses and softer schemes. Slim Shaker narrows that frame for something quieter and more contemporary. Modern is a flat slab front, the most minimal of the four. Is the tall boy version worth it?

It adds a full height storage column at one end, for roughly £85 to £150 depending on the finish. That's a lot of towel and toiletry storage for the money, and it uses vertical space that would otherwise sit empty. Skip it if the run is already tight against a door or window, or if you'd rather put a mirror cabinet above the basin instead.

What colours can I get?

Eleven across the range: white, gloss white, cashmere, grey, oak, anthracite, black, blue, green, sage green and pink. Cashmere and oak are the safe choices if you're planning to sell in a few years. Black and anthracite work best in rooms with plenty of natural light, since a dark run of furniture absorbs a lot of it. Green, blue and pink are the ones worth seeing in person before committing.

Will a combination unit fit a cloakroom?

A cloakroom is exactly what these were designed for. The Kiana at 1050mm is the compact option and arrives as a complete suite with the toilet included, which makes it the most straightforward way to fit out a downstairs loo. The Pemberton L-shaped units are the other route for a corner, turning the angle into a worktop rather than losing it. Our cloakroom suites cover the rest of the small room options.

Can I fit one myself?

A confident DIYer with plumbing experience can manage it, and everything ships with instructions and fixings. Be realistic about the work involved, though. The waste pipe has to line up with the pan position, the unit needs scribing to walls that are rarely square, and any mistake here means water somewhere you can't see it. If the existing soil pipe isn't in roughly the right place already, get a plumber in.
