Types of shower heads

Shape changes how the water falls as well as how the head looks. Here are the main options.

  • Round shower heads are the classic choice, giving an even spray that suits both modern shower rooms and traditional bathrooms.
  • Square shower heads have crisp, straight edges that pair well with square shower trays and enclosures for a clean, modern look.
  • Rainfall shower heads sit flat overhead and drop water straight down. A large shower head covers your whole body for an immersive experience.
  • Traditional rose shower heads have a domed, watering-can style shape that suits period bathrooms.
  • Shower head and hose kits pair a fixed overhead head with a handset on a flexible hose, plus a riser rail and exposed valve.

What is the best shower head for low water pressure?

Choose a smaller head with fewer, finer nozzles. It concentrates the flow you have, so the spray still feels firm. Large rainfall heads spread water across a wide plate and can feel weak on a gravity-fed system (hot water fed from a loft tank).

What is the best shower head for hard water?

Look for a head with rubber or silicone nozzles. You can rub limescale off them with your thumb, which keeps the spray even between deep cleans. Brushed finishes hide water marks better than polished chrome or black. Keep on top of cleaning with a monthly vinegar soak to stop build-up before it blocks the nozzles.

What colours and finishes do shower heads come in?

Our shower heads come in a range of colours and finishes to suit every bathroom. Chrome is the most common choice. It's bright, easy to wipe, and goes with almost any tap or towel rail. Black shower heads give a sharp, modern contrast against white tiles and suit black bathrooms with an industrial or monochrome feel. Gold and brushed brass shower heads add warmth, especially next to green, navy, or marble. Match the finish to your taps for a cohesive look.

How to replace a shower head

Most UK shower heads and handsets use a standard ½ inch thread, so swapping one is a quick job.

  1. Turn the shower off. Unscrew the old head anticlockwise by hand. If it’s stuck, wrap a cloth around it and use grips.
  2. Clean the thread on the arm or hose. Remove the old washer, any limescale and any old PTFE tape (thin tape that seals threads).
  3. Fit the washer supplied with your new head. Fixed arms may need two or three turns of PTFE tape, wrapped clockwise.
  4. Screw the new head on hand tight and turn the water on. If it drips, give it a quarter turn more.

How to fix leaking shower head

  1. Turn the shower off and find the leak. Drips from the joint usually mean a worn washer. Drips from the nozzles long after you switch off often point to the valve instead.
  2. Unscrew the head anticlockwise and check the washer inside the connection. Replace it if it's flattened, cracked, or missing.
  3. Clean any limescale off the thread. On fixed arms, wrap two or three turns of fresh PTFE tape clockwise.
  4. Screw the head back on hand tight and test. If it’s still dripping, give it a quarter turn more.
  5. If the hose itself is split or leaking, replace it. Most use the same standard ½ inch fitting, so it's a quick swap.

How to clean a shower head

Fill a plastic bag with white vinegar and tie it over the head so the nozzles sit in the liquid. Leave it for an hour. Scrub the nozzles with an old toothbrush, then run the shower for a minute to flush out loose limescale. On black or brushed brass finishes, check the care instructions first, as acidic cleaners can dull some coatings.
