Family Bathrooms — Practical, Hardwearing and Built to Last

A family bathroom has to do more than look good. It needs to handle the morning rush, survive bath time with small children and still feel like a grown-up space once the kids are in bed. At Bathroom City, we stock everything you need to put together a family bathroom that works for everyone in the household — from shower baths and thermostatic showers to soft-close toilets, generous vanity units and plenty of storage.

Shower Baths — The Family Bathroom Essential

If there is one product that defines the family bathroom, it is the shower bath. Children need baths. Adults want showers. A shower bath gives you both in the same footprint, which matters when you only have one bathroom to work with. Pair it with a bath shower screen and a thermostatic mixer shower, and you have a setup that covers every age group in the house. Our shower baths are available in a range of sizes, and most can be fitted with a standard bath panel for a clean, built-in finish.

Toilets That Handle Family Life

Families go through a lot of toilet seats. Soft-close mechanisms are not a luxury here — they are a way to stop children slamming the lid at six in the morning. We carry close coupled, back-to-wall and wall-hung toilets, all available with soft-close seats. Rimless designs are worth considering if easy cleaning is a priority, as there are no hidden rims where dirt and bacteria collect. If your household includes taller family members or anyone with reduced mobility, comfort height toilets raise the seat to make sitting and standing easier.

Vanity Units and Storage

Family bathrooms collect things — toothbrushes, bath toys, nappies, hairdryers, creams, medicines. Without proper storage, all of it ends up on the side of the bath or the windowsill. A vanity unit with drawers gives you concealed storage below the basin, keeping surfaces clear. Add a tallboy cabinet for towels and larger items, and a mirror cabinet above the basin for everyday bits. Wall-hung units keep the floor clear, which makes mopping faster — something you will appreciate after bath time.

Fitted Furniture for a Coordinated Look

If you want the family bathroom to look properly finished rather than a collection of mismatched pieces, fitted furniture is the way to go. Our Oliver and Ashford ranges let you build a fully coordinated bathroom where the vanity unit, toilet unit and storage all share the same finish. Fitted furniture also hides pipework and maximises storage, which is exactly what a busy bathroom needs.

Showers and Shower Enclosures

If you are lucky enough to have a separate shower in your family bathroom, a quadrant or sliding-door enclosure is a practical choice — they open without swinging into the room, so they work in tighter spaces. Thermostatic shower valves are a must for families with young children, as they prevent the water from suddenly running too hot. Our mixer showers and complete shower sets come with everything you need to get up and running, including handsets, riser rails and overhead shower heads.

Bathroom Taps

Taps in a family bathroom should be simple and reliable. Lever-style basin and bath taps are easier for children to use than traditional crosshead designs. A bath shower mixer tap is a cost-effective way to add a handheld shower to the bath without a full shower installation — useful for rinsing hair and cleaning the bath itself. We stock chrome, black and modern finishes to suit your overall look.

Planning a Family Bathroom

The key to a good family bathroom is thinking about who uses it and how. A rough checklist: a bath for young children (ideally a shower bath so adults can shower too), a toilet with a soft-close seat, a vanity unit with storage underneath, at least one wall cabinet or tallboy, and a thermostatic shower with a handset on a riser rail. Beyond that, it is a matter of matching the size and layout of your room. If you are unsure, you are welcome to visit our Birmingham showroom — open seven days a week — or give the team a call.

What should a family bathroom include?

At a minimum, a bath (or shower bath), a toilet, a basin and some storage. A shower bath is the most practical choice for families because it gives you a bath for young children and a shower for everyone else in the same space. Add a thermostatic shower valve to prevent scalding, a vanity unit with drawers for concealed storage, and a soft-close toilet seat to keep things quiet.

What size bath is best for a family bathroom?

A 1700mm straight bath is the most common size and fits comfortably in a standard UK bathroom. If your room is smaller, 1500mm and 1600mm baths are available. Shower baths are slightly wider at the shower end to give you more room when standing, so check the overall dimensions against your floor plan before ordering.

Are rimless toilets better for families?

Yes, in terms of hygiene and cleaning. Traditional toilets have a rim around the inside of the bowl where bacteria and limescale can build up out of sight. Rimless toilets flush water around the entire bowl with no hidden areas, which makes them easier and faster to clean — a real advantage in a household with children.

How do I stop my children slamming the toilet seat?

Fit a soft-close toilet seat. The hinges lower the lid slowly and quietly no matter how hard it is pushed, so there is no slamming and no risk of trapped fingers. All of our toilet ranges are available with soft-close seats, and they can be retrofitted to most existing toilets as well.

What is a thermostatic shower and why does it matter for families?

A thermostatic shower valve keeps the water at a constant temperature, even when someone flushes a toilet or runs a tap elsewhere in the house. This prevents sudden changes in temperature that could scald young children. If you have small children, a thermostatic valve is strongly recommended over a manual mixer.

Is wall-hung or freestanding furniture better for a family bathroom?

Both work well. Wall-hung furniture keeps the floor completely clear, which makes mopping and cleaning underneath much easier — particularly useful after messy bath times. Freestanding furniture is simpler to install and does not require a solid wall for mounting. If cleaning is your priority, wall-hung is worth the extra installation effort.

How much storage do I need in a family bathroom?

More than you think. A vanity unit with drawers covers daily essentials like toothpaste, soap and skincare. A tallboy cabinet handles towels, spare toilet rolls and cleaning products. A mirror cabinet above the basin is useful for medicines and smaller items you want within reach but out of sight. If you have the wall space, a wall cabinet adds even more without taking up any floor area.
