Japandi Bathrooms

Japandi brings together the calm simplicity of Japanese design with the warmth of Scandinavian interiors — and it works beautifully in a bathroom. Think natural wood-effect furniture, warm-toned brassware, soft textures and a palette that stays grounded in earthy neutrals. The result is a space that feels quiet, considered and genuinely relaxing to spend time in. Browse our Japandi-inspired collections below to find the pieces that bring this feeling to your bathroom.

What makes a bathroom Japandi

Pale oak appears in both traditions. Stone basins with chisel marks, low baths and brass left to oxidise all lean Japanese. Linen at the window and softer daylight palettes come from the Nordic side. Most Japandi bathrooms blur the two enough that it doesn’t matter.

The key elements of a Japandi bathroom

Everything sits lower than you'd expect: the vanity, the bath, the cabinets, if there are any. The materials follow the same logic. Pale oak with the grain showing through. Raw stone or concrete in the basin. Matt black or aged brass on the fittings. Knots in the wood and chips in the stone are kept as features, which leans on the Japanese idea of wabi-sabi meaning imperfection accepted as part of the design.

Materials and craft

Material choice is where Japandi diverges most sharply from modern. Pale European oak or ash on the vanity. Stone basins, ideally hand-carved with the tooling visible. Linen or natural fibre at the window. Brass left raw, allowed to oxidise. Each piece is bought to last. Quality over quantity is the underlying rule.

Japandi vanity units and storage

A Japandi vanity can sit on the floor or hang from the wall. Either works, as long as the height stays lower than the modern equivalent. Pale oak or ash on the fronts, with hand-pull recesses or grooved drawer fronts. Leather or rope handles where any are used. Storage stays closed wherever possible. The Japandi tradition keeps very little on display.

Colour palettes for a Japandi bathroom

Japandi palettes stay in a single warm register. Warm white as the base. Pale oak or ash on the wood. Stone in cream, beige or putty. The accent, if there is one, comes in black: matt black taps, charcoal stone, a single piece of dark joinery. Textiles occasionally take on a terracotta or rust tone. The room reads warm and restful.

Lighting and atmosphere

Japandi lighting runs warmer than modern by design. 2700K is the baseline. Layered between an overhead source and one or two feature pieces, often paper or fabric pendants that filter the light. Natural light gets priority during the day, so window dressing stays minimal. A single pendant over a freestanding tub is a common move.
