Black Shower Enclosures
A black shower enclosure frames the shower the way a picture frame finishes a painting. The slim black profiles create clean, architectural lines that turn a functional glass box into a design feature. Whether you're after a black-framed quadrant in a corner, a sliding door in a recess, or a walk-in panel with nothing but a single sheet of glass and a slim black edge — every enclosure here uses matt black framing to give the shower presence and definition. Browse by shape, size and door type below.
Black shower enclosures
A chrome shower enclosure does its job quietly — it holds the glass, contains the water, and doesn't draw attention to itself. A black shower enclosure does the opposite. The dark frame lines become visible architectural elements in the room, drawing the eye to the shower and giving it the kind of presence that chrome deliberately avoids. If you want the shower to be a feature rather than a fitting, black framing is how you get there.
Framed vs semi-frameless
Black shower enclosures come in two main constructions. Fully framed enclosures have black profiles running around every edge of every glass panel — top, bottom, sides and where panels meet. This creates a bold grid-like appearance with strong geometric lines, suited to industrial and modern styles. Semi-frameless enclosures have black profiles only on the outer structural edges — the door edges and centre joins are left clean and frameless. This creates a lighter, more refined look that still has the definition of black framing without the visual weight of a full frame. Semi-frameless is the more popular choice for contemporary bathrooms.
Quadrant enclosures
A black-framed quadrant enclosure fits into a corner with a curved front, taking up the smallest possible floor area. The black frame follows the curve, creating a distinctive silhouette that looks more designed than a standard chrome quadrant. Sliding doors open without swinging into the room. Available in standard quadrant (equal sides) and offset quadrant (wider on one side) configurations. Sizes start from 800mm x 800mm. The curved black frame is particularly striking against light tiles.
Sliding door enclosures
Black-framed sliding doors work in recesses and against walls. The door glides along a track behind the fixed panel, so nothing extends beyond the enclosure footprint. The black frame runs along the top rail and vertical edges, creating clean horizontal and vertical lines that suit modern and industrial bathrooms. Sliding doors give you the widest possible entry point without any swing space, making them practical for tighter rooms while the black frame adds visual impact.
Hinged door enclosures
A black-framed hinged door is the most traditional enclosure configuration — a single glass door that swings open on hinges. In black, the slim hinges and frame create a clean, architectural look. Hinged doors offer the widest unobstructed opening and the simplest mechanism. They need clearance space in front for the door swing, so they work best in rooms where there's space between the shower and other fixtures. Available for corner, recess and three-sided configurations.
Walk-in panels
A black-framed walk-in panel is the most minimal option — a single fixed sheet of glass with slim black profiles along the edges and a black stabiliser arm connecting the top of the glass to the wall. No door, no track, no moving parts. The black frame gives the glass panel definition and presence that a frameless panel doesn't have, while still keeping the shower area completely open. Walk-in panels suit wet room setups and larger shower areas where containment matters less than openness.
Smoked glass options
Some of our black enclosures are available with smoked or tinted glass instead of clear. Smoked glass adds another layer of depth to the black-framed design — the tinted glass creates a darker, more enclosed feeling inside the shower while the black frame defines the edges. From outside, smoked glass partially obscures the shower interior, which adds privacy and a sense of luxury. It's a premium option that works particularly well in industrial and dark-themed bathrooms.
Choosing the right size
Black enclosures are available from 700mm to 1400mm across all door types. For compact rooms, an 800mm x 800mm quadrant is the starting point. For standard rooms, a 900mm to 1200mm enclosure gives comfortable showering space. For wet rooms and larger bathrooms, a 1200mm to 1400mm walk-in panel creates a generous, open shower zone. Measure your available space, account for the tray size, and leave clearance for the door type you've chosen.
Pairing with trays
Black enclosures pair naturally with dark trays — black slate-effect and dark grey stone-effect trays create a seamless transition from the frame to the floor. White trays work too and create more contrast, highlighting the black frame against a lighter base. Low-profile trays at 25mm to 40mm keep the step-in height minimal and the overall look more streamlined. Match the tray shape to the enclosure shape — quadrant trays for quadrant enclosures, rectangular for sliding and hinged doors.
Coordinating with the rest of the room
A black shower enclosure sets a strong tone, so the rest of the room should respond to it. Matt black taps, a matt black heated towel rail and matt black accessories carry the same finish across the bathroom. Black furniture extends the scheme to the vanity and storage. If you'd rather not go fully black, a black enclosure works as a standalone feature in a white, grey or wood-toned room — the frame becomes the accent and everything else stays neutral.
Durability and care
The matt black finish on our enclosure frames is applied using either PVD coating or powder-coating, both of which are designed to resist tarnishing, corrosion and fading in humid bathroom environments. The glass is toughened safety glass at 6mm or 8mm thick. Clean the frame with a soft damp cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners. The glass can be cleaned with standard glass cleaner. With basic care, the finish and the glass maintain their appearance for years.
Need help choosing?
The right enclosure depends on your room shape, the available space, and where the door needs to open. Visit our Birmingham showroom to see black-framed enclosures on display in multiple configurations, or call us on 0121 753 0700 and we'll help you find the right shape, size and door type for your layout.
We offer quadrant, offset quadrant, sliding door, hinged door and walk-in panel enclosures, all with matt black frames. Both framed and semi-frameless options are available depending on the range.
Framed enclosures have black profiles around every edge of every glass panel — a bold, grid-like appearance. Semi-frameless enclosures have black profiles only on the outer structural edges, with the door edges and centre joins left clean. Semi-frameless is lighter and more contemporary; fully framed is bolder and more industrial.
Black enclosures range from 700mm to 1400mm depending on the type. Quadrant enclosures start from 800mm x 800mm. Sliding doors from 1000mm to 1400mm. Walk-in panels from 700mm to 1400mm. Check each product page for exact dimensions.
Yes. Some ranges include smoked or tinted glass as an alternative to clear. Smoked glass adds depth and privacy while the black frame provides definition. It's a premium option that suits dark-themed and industrial bathrooms.
A dark slate-effect or dark grey tray coordinates naturally with a black frame. White trays create more contrast. Low-profile trays at 25mm to 40mm give the cleanest look. Match the tray shape to the enclosure shape and make sure the dimensions match exactly.
Yes. Walk-in panels with black frames are one of the most popular wet room options. They can sit on a low-profile tray or directly on a tanked floor with a linear drain. The black frame gives the glass definition without enclosing the space.
Our black enclosures use 6mm or 8mm toughened safety glass depending on the range. 8mm glass feels more substantial and is more rigid, which matters for larger walk-in panels. 6mm is standard for framed enclosures where the frame provides structural support.
No. The matt black finish uses PVD or powder-coating designed to resist tarnishing, corrosion and fading in bathroom conditions. With basic care — soft cloth, no abrasive cleaners — the finish maintains its appearance for years.
Most enclosures are sold without a tray so you can choose the tray size, shape and colour that suits your layout. Compatible trays are listed on each enclosure's product page. Some bundles include a tray — check the product listing for details.
