What is a double ended bath?

Most baths have the taps at one end and the plug at the other, which means one person gets the comfortable end and one person doesn't. A double ended bath solves that. The taps and plug sit in the middle of the bath, leaving both ends identical: same depth, same shape, same amount of room. It's a small shift in design with a noticeable effect on how the bath actually gets used.

What's the difference between a double ended bath and a standard bath?

Tap position, primarily. A standard bath has the taps and plug at one end, which gives the bath a clear head end and a less comfortable foot end. A double ended bath has the fittings in the centre, so both ends are the same. The result is a bath that works equally well from either side, which matters more than it sounds when two people are sharing it regularly.

Can you use a double ended bath with a shower?

Yes, and it's popular for space-saving. A double ended bath with a shower requires a bath shower mixer tap positioned centrally, along with a bath shower screen to keep the water where it belongs. The central tap position works well for showering because the shower head isn't fighting for space with the bath taps at one end. If you're planning to use the bath as a shower regularly, it's worth thinking about the screen position early in the process.

What size are double ended baths?

Double ended baths are available in the same size range as standard baths, typically from 1500mm to 1800mm in length, with widths of 700mm to 800mm being the most common. The right size depends on the bathroom dimensions and how the bath will be used. For two people bathing together, a longer bath makes a real difference in comfort, but if you’re undecided, our standard bath size guide will tell you what to consider when choosing.

Where should the taps go on a double ended bath?

In the middle. Central tap placement is what defines a double ended bath and what makes it function differently from a standard one. In practice, this means choosing a tap designed for central mounting, which can either sit on the rim of the bath, or be wall-mounted above it. A freestanding tap is another option if the bath is positioned away from the wall, and tends to look particularly well considered in the right bathroom.

Are double ended baths suitable for small bathrooms?

They need the same floor space as any bath of the same size, so the bath dimensions are the consideration rather than the double ended design itself. Where a double ended bath does make a difference in a smaller bathroom is in how it's positioned: because both ends are the same, it can be placed with either end against a wall without any loss of comfort or function. That flexibility can make layout planning more straightforward.

What material are double ended baths made from?

Most are made from acrylic, which is warm to the touch, retains heat well, and is lighter than the alternatives, making installation more manageable. If you’d prefer to go against the grain, some double ended baths come in steel, which is heavier and more durable, with a surface that holds its finish particularly well over time. The right material depends on budget, how the bath will be installed, and personal preference for feel.
