- Black Towel Rails & Radiators
Black Towel Rails & Radiators
A black towel rail or radiator does two jobs at once — it keeps your towels warm and dry, and it gives the room a bold vertical accent that ties into the rest of your black brassware. Matt black heated towel rails and radiators have become one of the most popular choices in modern bathroom design because they add visual weight to a wall that would otherwise sit empty. Browse our range of matt black towel rails, ladder radiators and designer radiators below.
Black towel rails and radiators
A heated towel rail is one of those bathroom products that's easy to pick last and think about least. But it's often one of the largest single items on the wall, and in a room where every other fitting has been chosen in matt black, a chrome towel rail sticks out like it wasn't invited. A matt black towel rail completes the scheme, turning a functional heating element into a deliberate piece of the room's design.
Ladder towel rails
The most popular style is the ladder towel rail — horizontal bars running between two vertical side rails, wall mounted at a comfortable height for hanging and reaching towels. Matt black ladder rails come in flat bar and round tube profiles. Flat bar rails have a more contemporary, architectural look — clean straight lines with a slim profile that sits close to the wall. Round tube rails have a more traditional feel with softer edges. Both heat evenly and hold towels securely. The choice comes down to the design language of the rest of the room.
Flat bar vs round tube
Flat bar towel rails have square or rectangular cross-section bars — they create clean shadow lines on the wall and suit modern, industrial and minimalist bathrooms. Round tube rails have cylindrical bars — they're softer and more traditional, suiting transitional and classic-contemporary rooms. In a fully matt black bathroom with squared brassware and angular furniture, a flat bar rail is the natural match. In a room with softer shapes and warmer tones, round tube can feel more at home.
Sizing for your bathroom
Matt black towel rails come in a range of heights and widths. Compact rails at 800mm to 1000mm tall and 400mm to 500mm wide suit en suites, cloakrooms and smaller bathrooms where wall space is limited. Standard rails at 1200mm tall and 500mm to 600mm wide are the most popular size for family bathrooms — tall enough to hold multiple towels with space between them for air circulation. Full-height rails at 1600mm to 1800mm make a dramatic vertical feature on a tall wall and hold the most towels. Width is usually determined by the available wall space between other fixtures.
Heat output
Towel rails serve two functions — warming towels and heating the room. Larger rails with more bars produce higher BTU output and contribute more to the room's ambient temperature. Compact rails warm towels effectively but may not produce enough heat to warm a larger bathroom on their own. Check the BTU rating on each product page and compare it to the size of your room. If the towel rail alone won't heat the space sufficiently, consider supplementing with underfloor heating or a separate radiator.
Designer radiators
Beyond the standard ladder style, we offer matt black designer radiators with more distinctive profiles — vertical panel radiators, column radiators and contemporary designs that prioritise visual impact alongside heat output. A tall, narrow matt black vertical radiator on a feature wall makes a strong design statement while delivering serious heat. These suit larger bathrooms and rooms where the radiator is positioned prominently rather than tucked behind a door.
Central heating vs dual fuel vs electric
Our matt black towel rails are available in three heating configurations. Central heating models connect to your existing central heating system and heat when the boiler is on. Electric models have an independent heating element and can be switched on year-round regardless of the boiler — useful for summer months when you want warm towels without heating the whole house. Dual fuel models connect to central heating but also have an electric element, giving you both options. Choose based on how and when you want the rail to operate.
Coordinating with other black fittings
The matt black finish on our towel rails and radiators is designed to coordinate with matt black taps, shower fittings, enclosure frames and accessories. For the closest colour match, choose a towel rail from the same collection as your other brassware. If you're mixing collections, our matt black finishes are consistent enough across ranges to sit comfortably together, though very slight tonal variation between manufacturers is possible.
Positioning on the wall
The best position for a towel rail is within easy reach of the shower or bath — close enough to grab a warm towel when you step out, but not so close that it gets consistently splashed. The wall opposite the shower or beside the bath is the most common position. Avoid positioning directly above a toilet or behind a door where the towels can't be reached easily. Leave at least 150mm clearance above and below the rail for air circulation and visual breathing room.
Durability and care
Our matt black towel rails use steel or stainless steel bodies with a PVD or powder-coated matt black finish. The finish is designed to withstand the heat cycling and humidity of a bathroom environment without tarnishing, peeling or discolouring. Clean with a soft damp cloth and avoid abrasive products. Don't hang soaking wet towels directly from a freshly cleaned rail — let the surface dry first.

We offer flat bar ladder rails, round tube ladder rails, vertical panel radiators and designer radiators — all in matt black. Flat bar is the most popular for modern bathrooms. Round tube suits softer, more transitional styles. Designer options are available for rooms where the radiator is a feature piece.
Heights range from 800mm for compact rails up to 1800mm for full-height models. Widths range from 400mm for narrow walls up to 600mm for standard installations. Check each product page for exact dimensions and BTU output.
Both. All our heated towel rails produce BTU output that contributes to room heating as well as warming towels. Larger rails with more bars produce more heat. Check the BTU rating against your room size — in a small en suite, a standard rail may be enough. In a larger bathroom, you may need supplementary heating.
Central heating connects to your boiler and heats when the system is on. Electric operates independently with its own element — usable year-round. Dual fuel does both — runs off central heating in winter and electric in summer. Electric and dual fuel are more versatile but cost slightly more.
Yes. The PVD or powder-coated finish is specifically designed for heated products and withstands constant heat cycling without peeling, discolouring or degrading. Our matt black towel rails are rated for bathroom use with normal temperature ranges.
As a rough guide, you need around 80 to 100 BTU per cubic metre of bathroom space. Measure the room's length, width and height, multiply them together, then multiply by 80 to 100. Compare that to the BTU rating on the towel rail. If the rail doesn't cover the full requirement, supplement with underfloor heating or a separate radiator.
Absolutely. A matt black towel rail is one of the easiest ways to add a modern accent to a white, grey or wood-toned bathroom. It works as a standalone black feature without needing the rest of the room to be black.
Yes. Wall fixings and brackets are included. The rails are designed for wall mounting with concealed or semi-concealed fixings. For plasterboard walls, you may need additional support or specialist fixings depending on the weight of the rail.
Close enough to reach a warm towel when you step out — typically on the wall adjacent to or opposite the shower, within one or two steps. Avoid positioning it where it will be consistently splashed with water. Leave at least 150mm clearance above and below for air circulation.
Yes. Our Birmingham showroom has matt black towel rails and radiators on display in various sizes and styles. Seeing them on a wall gives you a much better sense of the scale and finish than a product photo. Visit the showroom or call us on 0121 753 0700.
