Modern Toilets

A modern toilet does its job quietly — clean lines, efficient flushing and a design that sits naturally in a contemporary bathroom without demanding attention. Our range covers wall-hung, close-coupled and back to wall styles, all built around rimless flush technology, soft-close seats and slim ceramic profiles that look considered rather than bulky.

Whether you're after the minimal floating look of a wall-hung toilet or the simpler installation of a close-coupled design, every model is engineered for hygiene, water efficiency and long-term durability. Choose from round, square and D-shaped pans in sizes to suit full bathrooms, en suites and cloakrooms.

Modern toilets — better hygiene, cleaner design

The toilet is the hardest-working fixture in any bathroom, and modern designs have improved in every way that matters. Better flushing, easier cleaning, less water, quieter operation and a look that actually fits with the rest of a well-designed room. If you're renovating or replacing an older toilet, the difference you'll notice in a modern model — both in performance and appearance — is significant.

Wall-hung modern toilets

A wall-hung toilet is the defining choice for a contemporary bathroom. The pan is mounted to the wall with no contact with the floor, and the cistern is concealed behind the wall or inside furniture. The result is a clean, floating silhouette with nothing on show except the pan and the flush plate. The open floor beneath makes cleaning effortless — no more scrubbing around a pedestal base. Wall-hung modern toilets require a concealed cistern frame fixed inside the wall cavity, which adds to the installation but gives you complete control over the height and position of the pan.

Close-coupled modern toilets

A close-coupled toilet is the most familiar format — the cistern sits directly on the back of the pan as a single, self-contained unit. It's the simplest to install, the most affordable and requires no wall reinforcement or concealed plumbing. Modern close-coupled designs have evolved well beyond the boxy shapes of older models. Today's versions feature slim cisterns, short-projection pans, squared-off or D-shaped bowls and concealed fixings that give them a much more refined, contemporary look. If you want a modern aesthetic with a straightforward installation, close-coupled is the pragmatic choice.

Back to wall modern toilets

A back to wall toilet sits with the rear of the pan flush against the wall or a piece of furniture, with the cistern hidden behind — either inside a stud wall or within a dedicated furniture unit. This gives you a cleaner look than close-coupled without the structural requirements of a wall-hung frame. Back to wall modern toilets are a popular middle ground — they're easier to install than wall-hung, neater than close-coupled and work well in both furniture-led and minimalist bathroom designs.

Rimless flush technology

Rimless toilets have become the standard across modern designs, and once you understand why, it's hard to go back. A traditional rimmed toilet has a channel hidden under the rim where water enters the bowl — and where bacteria, limescale and staining build up over time in places you can't easily reach. A rimless toilet removes that channel entirely. Water is directed around the bowl in a clean, powerful sweep from a direct-flush system, reaching every surface with nothing hidden. The result is more hygienic, easier to keep clean and more water-efficient. Every modern toilet in our range features rimless technology.

Short-projection modern toilets

Space is at a premium in most UK bathrooms, and a short-projection modern toilet can make a genuine difference. Standard toilets project around 650–700mm from the wall. Short-projection models bring that down to 480–550mm — recovering 10–20cm of floor space that can be the difference between a cramped room and a comfortable one. This is particularly valuable in en suites, cloakrooms and smaller family bathrooms. Despite the shorter depth, modern short-projection toilets maintain full-size bowls and comfortable seating positions — the savings come from more efficient cistern and pan engineering, not from shrinking the usable parts.

Flush plates and buttons

With concealed cistern systems (wall-hung and back to wall), the flush plate is the only visible part of the flushing mechanism — and it's a design detail worth getting right. Flush plates are available in a range of shapes and finishes, from minimal square plates in matt black or brushed nickel to more traditional round buttons in chrome. Most offer dual flush (a smaller flush for liquids and a full flush for solids), giving you water savings with every use. The finish you choose should coordinate with your other brassware — taps, shower controls and towel rails — to keep the room feeling cohesive.

Water efficiency

Modern toilets are significantly more water-efficient than older models. A standard dual-flush modern toilet uses around 4–6 litres for a full flush and 2.5–3 litres for a reduced flush, compared to 9–13 litres for a single-flush toilet from the 1990s or earlier. Over a year, the water savings are substantial — both for your bills and for the environment. All of our modern toilets meet current water efficiency standards, and many carry WRAS approval confirming they're tested and certified for use in the UK.

What types of modern toilets are available?

Our modern toilet range includes three main types: wall-hung (pan mounted to the wall with a concealed cistern behind), close-coupled (cistern sits on the back of the pan as one unit) and back to wall (pan sits against the wall or furniture with a concealed cistern). Each type is available in a range of shapes — round, square and D-shaped — and in standard and short-projection sizes to suit different room layouts.

What is a rimless modern toilet?

A rimless modern toilet has no traditional rim channel around the inside of the bowl. Instead of water entering through hidden holes under a rim, a direct-flush system sends water around the entire pan in a single powerful sweep. This means there are no concealed areas where bacteria and limescale can build up, making rimless modern toilets significantly more hygienic and easier to clean than traditional rimmed designs. Every modern toilet in our range comes with rimless technology as standard.

Do I need a frame for a wall-hung modern toilet?

Yes. A wall-hung modern toilet requires a concealed cistern frame that is fixed inside the wall cavity or behind furniture. The frame carries the weight of the toilet and houses the cistern and flush mechanism. Frames are typically sold separately so you can choose the right size and configuration for your wall type. We stock all compatible frames and flush plates — if you need help matching a frame to your chosen toilet, get in touch and we'll confirm compatibility.

What is a short-projection modern toilet and when should I choose one?

A short-projection modern toilet has a reduced depth from back to front — typically 480–550mm compared to 650–700mm for a standard model. This recovers valuable floor space and is ideal for smaller bathrooms, en suites and cloakrooms where every centimetre counts. Despite the shorter projection, modern short-projection toilets maintain a full-size bowl and comfortable seating position. Choose one when space is tight or when you want to create a more open feel in the room.

How much water does a modern toilet use per flush?

A dual-flush modern toilet typically uses 4–6 litres for a full flush and 2.5–3 litres for a reduced flush. This is a significant improvement over older single-flush toilets, which could use 9–13 litres per flush. Over the course of a year, upgrading to a modern dual-flush toilet can save thousands of litres of water. All of our modern toilets meet current UK water efficiency standards.

What is the difference between a close-coupled and back to wall modern toilet?

With a close-coupled modern toilet, the cistern sits visibly on the back of the pan — it's a single, self-contained unit that's simple to install with no wall work required. With a back to wall modern toilet, the pan sits flush against the wall or a furniture unit and the cistern is hidden behind, giving a cleaner look. Back to wall models require either a stud wall or furniture to conceal the cistern. Close-coupled is easier to install; back to wall is neater in appearance.

How do I choose a flush plate for my modern toilet?

Flush plates are required for wall-hung and back to wall modern toilets with concealed cisterns. Choose a flush plate that matches the finish of your other brassware — chrome, matt black, brushed brass or brushed nickel are the most common options. Most plates offer dual flush for water efficiency. Check compatibility with your cistern frame before ordering, as not all plates fit all frames. We list compatible flush plates on every toilet and frame product page, and our team can confirm the right match if you're unsure.
