- Modern Vanity Units
Modern Vanity Units
A modern vanity unit does three jobs at once — it houses your basin, hides your pipework and gives you storage where you need it most. Our contemporary range covers wall-hung and freestanding designs in sizes from 400mm to 1200mm, with finishes including matt white, anthracite grey, natural oak, walnut and stone.
Every unit is built with moisture-resistant materials, soft-close drawers and doors, and basin options to suit different tastes — from slim ceramic tops to countertop vessels and integrated resin basins. Whether you're furnishing a cloakroom, an en suite or a main bathroom, a modern vanity unit gives the room a focal point and keeps your surfaces clear.
Modern vanity units — the centrepiece of a contemporary bathroom
If there's one piece of furniture that defines the feel of a modern bathroom, it's the vanity unit. It's the first thing you use in the morning and the last thing you use at night, and it sits at eye level in the most visible part of the room. Get the vanity right and everything else follows — the brassware, the mirror, the storage all fall into place around it.
Wall-hung modern vanity units
Wall-hung vanity units are the signature of a contemporary bathroom. Mounted directly to the wall with no legs or plinth touching the floor, they create a floating effect that opens up the room and makes the floor easy to clean. The space beneath also creates a visual break that makes a bathroom feel larger than it is — particularly useful in en suites and smaller rooms. Wall-hung units require secure fixing to a solid or reinforced wall, and plumbing runs behind or inside the unit to keep everything hidden. The result is a clean, minimal look with nothing on show that doesn't need to be.
Freestanding modern vanity units
If wall-mounting isn't practical — or you prefer a bit more presence in the room — freestanding modern vanity units offer the same contemporary styling with a simpler installation. They sit on slim legs or a plinth and can be positioned against any wall without the need for structural reinforcement. Freestanding units work particularly well in larger bathrooms where the furniture can anchor the space, and they're easier to move if you redesign the room down the line. Our freestanding range uses the same moisture-resistant materials and soft-close hardware as the wall-hung options.
Basin options for modern vanity units
The basin is as much a design choice as the unit itself. An integrated basin — where the basin and countertop are moulded as a single piece — gives you the cleanest look with no joins or edges to trap water. A semi-recessed basin sits partially into the unit, saving depth in narrower rooms while still giving you usable counter space. A countertop basin sits on top of the vanity and makes a bolder statement, particularly in larger formats or unusual shapes. A standard inset basin drops into a cutout in the worktop and is the most versatile option for mixing units and basins from different ranges. Each option changes the feel of the unit, so think about the look you're after alongside the practical fit.
Finishes and materials
The finish on a modern vanity unit sets the tone for the whole room. Matt white is the most versatile — it's bright, clean and coordinates with everything. Grey tones (anthracite, charcoal, cement) add depth and work well with matt black or brushed nickel brassware. Wood-effect finishes like natural oak, light elm and dark walnut bring warmth and texture without the moisture risk of real timber. All of our vanity units use engineered boards with sealed edges and water-resistant laminate or lacquer finishes designed to withstand daily exposure to splashes and steam.
Getting the size right
Modern vanity units are measured by width, and choosing the right size depends on your available wall space and how much storage you need. A 400mm unit is compact enough for a cloakroom or downstairs toilet. A 600mm unit is the most common choice for a standard bathroom — big enough for a generous basin and a useful drawer or cupboard underneath. An 800mm unit gives you counter space either side of the basin, while 1000mm and 1200mm units accommodate double basins or wider single basins with maximum storage. Always measure the wall space at both floor and ceiling level — older bathrooms can be uneven — and leave clearance for any radiators, doors or towel rails nearby.
Coordinating your modern vanity unit with the rest of the room
A modern vanity unit looks best when it's part of a wider scheme rather than standing alone. Match the finish to your mirror cabinet or tallboy for a fitted look, or pair a wood-effect vanity with white sanitaryware for contrast. Brassware makes a bigger difference than most people expect — a matt black tap on a white vanity looks completely different to a brushed gold tap on the same unit. If you're building a scheme from scratch, start with the vanity finish and work outward.
A modern vanity unit is a contemporary bathroom cabinet designed to house a basin and conceal plumbing while providing storage. It typically features clean lines, minimal hardware, soft-close doors or drawers and a moisture-resistant finish. Modern vanity units come in wall-hung and freestanding styles and range from compact 400mm cloakroom models to larger 1200mm double-basin units.
It depends on your bathroom and your priorities. A wall-hung modern vanity unit creates a floating, minimal look and frees up floor space — ideal for smaller rooms and easier to clean underneath. A freestanding unit is simpler to install, doesn't require structural wall reinforcement and offers a bit more visual weight in larger bathrooms. Both options are available across our range in the same finishes and sizes.
Our modern vanity units are available in widths from 400mm to 1200mm. The most common sizes are 400mm (cloakrooms), 500mm and 600mm (standard bathrooms and en suites), 800mm (where you want counter space), and 1000–1200mm (double basins or wider single basins with maximum storage). Heights and depths vary by range, and all dimensions are listed on every product page.
Modern vanity units are available with several basin types. An integrated basin is moulded as one piece with the countertop for a seamless, easy-clean look. A semi-recessed basin projects partially from the unit, saving depth. A countertop vessel basin sits on top for a bolder design statement. A standard inset basin drops into the worktop and gives you the most flexibility. The right choice depends on the look you want and the space you're working with.
Modern vanity units are built to be highly moisture-resistant rather than fully submerged waterproof. They use engineered boards with sealed edges and water-resistant laminate or lacquer finishes that withstand daily splashes, steam and humidity. As long as standing water isn't left to pool on surfaces and any silicone seals are maintained, a quality modern vanity unit will hold up well for years. Avoid placing units where they'll be directly hit by a shower spray without an enclosure or screen.
A wall-hung modern vanity unit mounts to the wall using a metal bracket or rail system, which is fixed into the wall studs or masonry. The unit then hooks onto the bracket and is levelled. Plumbing connections run through the back or base of the unit. You'll need a solid wall or timber noggins between studs to carry the weight of the unit, basin and water. If you're not sure whether your wall is suitable, a plumber or bathroom fitter can check before you commit. We include fitting instructions with every unit and our team is available if you have questions.
You can, and it often works well. The key is keeping finishes complementary — a natural oak modern vanity unit pairs nicely with a white tallboy, for example, or an anthracite vanity with a matching mirror cabinet. If you're mixing ranges, try to keep the hardware style consistent (handleless with handleless, or slim bar handles throughout). If you're unsure about combinations, get in touch and we'll help you find pieces that sit well together.
