What is the difference between a shower enclosure and a shower cubicle?

Very little, in practice. Both describe the glass doors and panels that surround a shower tray and keep water where it belongs. "Cubicle" tends to suggest a fully enclosed unit with a door at the front, while "enclosure" covers everything from a single sliding door fitted between two walls to a large walk-in screen. You'll see both terms across our range, and they mean the same thing when you're shopping.

Which shower enclosure suits my bathroom?

How do I measure for a new shower enclosure?

Measure the width and depth of the space at floor level, then again at head height, since walls are rarely perfectly straight. Use the smallest figure. Check it against the adjustment range listed on the product before you order. Height counts as well. Most of our enclosures stand between 1900mm and 2000mm tall, so for a sloped ceiling or loft bathroom, our reduced height shower doors come in at 1750mm. Working with a compact room? Our guide to the best shower cubicles for small bathrooms compares popular sizes.

Should I buy a shower enclosure and tray together?

Where you can, yes. Buying both at once lets you confirm the dimensions line up before anything arrives, which saves a frustrating few millimetres of mismatch on fitting day. Several of our walk-in enclosures come with a tray included, and our shower trays are sized to pair with the rest of the range. Check where your waste pipe runs first. If it sits below the floor, a standard or low profile shower tray will do the job. If it runs above floor level, a raised shower tray with a riser kit hides the pipework neatly.

Can I fit a shower enclosure myself?

If you're replacing an old enclosure in the same spot and you're comfortable with a drill and spirit level, it's a realistic DIY job. Bring a second pair of hands, because glass panels are heavy. Where there's no existing tray or plumbing, a plumber should handle the waste connections before you start. Our step-by-step guide on how to fit a shower tray covers the groundwork, and if you've chosen a sliding door, see how to install a sliding shower door.

How do I stop my shower enclosure from leaking?

Most leaks trace back to three places: the silicone seal, the door seals, or a tray that isn't quite level. Reseal around the tray and wall profiles once the old silicone starts to lift or discolour, and replace worn door seals, rather than piling fresh sealant on top. A quick squeegee after each shower stops limescale building up.

Our guide on how to fix a leaky shower walks through the usual culprits.

Can I see shower enclosures before I buy?

Yes. Our Birmingham bathroom showroom is open seven days a week, with over 180 bathrooms on display across 80,000 sq ft. It's the easiest way to test a door action, compare finishes side by side, and talk sizes through with our team. Can't make the trip? Our ultimate guide to shower enclosures covers every type in more detail.
