What is a riser rail?

A riser rail is a vertical bar fixed to your shower wall. It holds your handset on a sliding bracket, called the riser rail slider, which locks in place wherever you set it. You can shower hands-free at a height that suits you, then lift the handset off to rinse your hair, wash the kids, or clean the tray. An adjustable shower riser rail makes sense in a family bathroom, where users can range from toddlers to tall adults.

Some kits go further. A rigid riser rail kit adds a fixed overhead shower head at the top of the rail, so one valve gives you a full soak and a handheld rinse.

What’s the difference between a rigid riser and a slide rail kit?

Both hold a handset at an adjustable height. The difference is how the water reaches the shower.

A slide rail kit has a rail, slider, hose, and handset. It connects to a single outlet, so it suits mixer showers, bath shower mixer taps, and many electric showers.
A rigid riser kit uses a solid pipe that carries water up from the valve to an overhead head. The handset sits on a slider lower down. A diverter (a switch that sends water to the head or the handset) lets you choose between them.

How does a shower riser rail slider work?

The slider grips the rail and holds the handset in place. Depending on the design, you lock it with a push button, a twist knob, or a friction grip. Many sliders also tilt, so you can angle the spray towards you or away from the wall.

Sliders aren't universal, so measure your rail's diameter and check its profile (round or square) before you order one.

Will a shower riser rail kit fit my shower?

It depends on your valve. A rigid riser rail kit connects to the top outlet of an exposed shower valve, which sits on the wall surface. Our complete riser rail kits include a matching valve, so you don't need to check compatibility between separate parts.

If you have a concealed valve or an electric shower, a slide rail with a hose is usually the simpler route. Before you buy, check the product page for the riser height, the outlet position, and the fixing centres (the distance between the wall brackets).

What finishes do shower riser rails come in?

Our range comes in chrome, black, and brushed bronze. A chrome shower riser rail is the easiest to match. It's bright, wipes clean, and sits well next to chrome bathroom taps and most towel rails. Black gives sharp contrast against white or pale tiles and suits black bathrooms with a monochrome or industrial feel. Brushed bronze adds warmth and pairs well with gold bathrooms and stone-coloured tiles. Match your riser rail to your taps and valve for a joined-up look.

How to replace a shower riser rail

Swapping a slide rail is a straightforward job if you have a drill and a spirit level.

Turn the shower off. Unscrew the hose from the handset and the outlet, then lift the handset off the slider.
Remove the old rail. Most end brackets hide their screws under a cover cap or behind a grub screw (a small headless screw). Loosen it, then unscrew the brackets from the wall.
Check the fixing centres on your new rail. If they don't match the old holes, fill the old ones with waterproof filler or white silicone.
Use a detector to check for hidden pipes and cables. Pipework often runs straight up above the valve.
Hold the new rail in place and mark the bracket positions with a spirit level. Drill with a tile bit, push in the wall plugs, and add a dab of silicone to each hole to keep water out of the wall.
Fit the slider onto the rail before you fix the final bracket. Screw the brackets in place and clip the covers back on.
Reconnect the hose and handset hand tight. Run the shower and check every joint.

Replacing a rigid riser rail kit is a bigger job. The riser pipe connects straight to the valve outlet, so it has to line up exactly. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, or use a plumber if you're changing the valve too.
