Benefits of Using Shower Enclosures in Limited Bathroom Spaces
A small shower cubicle can elevate the aesthetic appeal of your modern bathroom. You can pick from an assortment of glass types, designs, styles, and finishes to match your aesthetic vision.
A frameless glass enclosure would be perfect for a minimalist look. Or, if you prefer a classic style, a framed enclosure would be ideal.
1. Maximum Floor Space
Compared to a bathtub, a shower enclosure can save valuable floor space, presenting the right blend of functionality and aesthetics.
The reduced footprint of a tiny, 3-sided shower cubicle means you can easily accommodate it anywhere in your bathroom, not just the corners.
2. Corner Compatibility
Many shower cubicles for small bathrooms are designed to fit perfectly into corners, making the most of often unused areas in small bathrooms.
Get accurate measurements of your bathroom before you explore the available small shower cubicles.
3. Water Splash Containment
Stray water splashes can be a slip hazard, and they need to be contained. It's essential to keep the bathroom floor and other surfaces dry.
A shower cubicle creates an effective barrier between the showering area and the rest of your bathroom, preventing water from splashing out.

Germs in Your Bathroom: Everything You Need to Know
Who would have thought that not washing your hands can leave over 200 million bacteria on them, or that failing to put the toilet seat down could contaminate your toothbrush? It's surprising to many, but it's crucial to be aware of the germs and bacteria that lurk in your seemingly spotless bathroom.
You may have seen several advertisements on television about the implications of bathroom germs, bacteria and possible infections, but you've likely never given it a second thought.
One quick glance at your bathroom and you may be fooled into thinking that it's spotlessly clean and you're safe from any poor hygiene implications. That may not be the reality.
We're giving you the cold hard truth about what lurks behind the sheen and shine of your bathroom.
What Are Bathroom Germs?
What Causes These Germs in the Bathroom?
How Many Germs Are in Your Bathroom?
How Long Can These Pesky Germs Survive?

What Are Bathroom Germs?
Bathroom germs are potentially harmful bacteria and microbes that can cause illnesses such as strep throat, staph infections, salmonella, and athlete's foot. There's a wide variety of bathroom germs that you may find loitering in your bathroom, many of them potentially harmful.
E.Coli, Salmonella and Staphylococcus Aureus are three of the biggest bathroom culprits. These germs and bacteria are found across bathroom surfaces like toilets, bathroom floors and shower curtains. Shockingly, traces of these bacteria and faecal matter have even been found on toothbrushes!
What Causes These Germs in the Bathroom?
The biggest cause of bathroom germs is infrequent cleaning. Sinks, towels, showers, floors and even your door handle have been shown to be home to hundreds of millions of bacteria, and this is multiplied when bathrooms are not cleaned regularly.
Another cause is one that you need to be especially aware of: keeping your toothbrush too close to the toilet. The University of Pennsylvania recommends keeping your toothbrush more than 4ft from your toilet to minimise the risks of E.Coli, staph infections and streptococcus.
How Many Germs Are in Your Bathroom?
According to researchers from Manchester University, these hotbeds of bacteria and fungi can be linked to health conditions such as Legionnaires', Crohn's disease, as well as general skin, hair, eyes and ear complaints.
There are around 200 million bacteria per square inch on each hand after you visit the average bathroom. Scary, right? Not only are there hundreds of millions of them, but they can travel across your bathroom, to the sink and the insides of showers.
Add to this, a survey of 100,000 people found that 62% of men and 40% of women don't wash their hands after using the toilet! Disgusting. Wash your hands, people!
How Long Can These Pesky Germs Survive?
Hours. Germs aren't afraid to hang around – significant amounts of bathroom bacteria survive for hours after each flush of a toilet, and hours after a shower too. If your household bathroom is being used every few hours, the breeding ground is continually reset.
According to the NHS, germs like E.Coli and salmonella can survive for as long as four hours. Remember Staphylococcus Aureus, the germ responsible for staph infections? Well, this germ can survive for days or weeks – that should motivate you to keep your bathroom clean.
If a family member or roommate is ill, take extra care to ensure you are frequently wiping surfaces clean with disinfectant.
What Can You Do to Minimise Bathroom Germs?
While we hope this information doesn't apply to you, it's an all-too-familiar case that people don't know what lurks behind their bathroom door.
Hopefully, the information we've provided about bathroom germs, bacteria and potential infections will motivate you to be extra vigilant. Don't let germs linger.
Wash your hands with warm, soapy water (count your ABCs twice through when washing)
Regularly clean your shower, shower curtains and bathroom floor
Remember, your bathroom is a hotbed for microbial growth – regular maintenance is crucial for good hygiene
Close the toilet lid when flushing to prevent the spread of dangerous microbes and bacteria
Don't use the same towel more than 4–5 times
Wear slippers – walking barefoot in a dirty bathroom can cause athlete's foot
What Can You Do to Avoid Germ-Related Infections While Using Public Toilets?
Women's Health recommends wiping down public toilet seats with toilet paper before using them, and making sure that you minimise touching any surfaces you don't need to.
Another way to avoid germ-related infections is to flush the toilet with your shoe if you happen to encounter a public toilet without a lid (extremely common!). Use clean tissue to open any bins or doors. Below is an infographic that highlights everything you should know about germs in your bathroom and the associated risks.

1. Soft Simplicity
The Oliver Fitted Furniture and two mirror cabinets serve as the focal point in this modern bathroom. The large framed window presents a wonderful connection with nature and greenery.
The different shades of grey transition smoothly and almost seamlessly. The colours blend well with the white basins and the crisp, simple lines of the fixtures.
The vanity units, overhead storage cabinet, and mirror cabinets of this grey fitted furniture fit together perfectly as well. The large square floor tiles give the impression that the space is much bigger than it actually is.
2. Spacious Grey Bathroom
This spacious bathroom uses layers of white and different shades of grey to keep the decor contemporary, classic and timeless. The platinum grey wall and ceiling contrast well with the white ceramic basin and white square toilet.
The grey grey fitted furniture comprises a vanity unit with the worktop of the same colour and a tallboy with open storage space. The dark grey bath panel gives added depth and richness. The three overhanging ceiling lights of different shapes create the perfect accent.
3. Grey and White Fitted Furniture Set
Make your bathroom elegant and adorable by using grey and white colours as the theme. When grey is mixed with white, it emphasises the crispness and purity of grey. The texture of the cool grey bathroom walls plays a huge part in the ambience of this ultra-modern bathroom. The floor features an intricate octagonal pattern of square tiles.
The colour of the prominent design on the tiles matches the wall colour. This grey and white bathroom idea benefits greatly from the introduction of premium MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard), and isn't restricted to the worktop of the grey fitted furniture.
4. Space Saver
A two-door mirrored cabinet dominates the space. This bathroom also features a simple grey two-door vanity for extra storage space and a back-to-wall toilet with a concealed cistern. The light grey vanity with the dark grey MDF worktop blends softly with the small white tiles of the compact backsplash. The grey worktop also complements the white-coloured sidewalls.
The durability and hard-wearing properties of the Oliver 1200 Fitted Cloakroom Suite are impressive. This fitted furniture comes with filler panels that ensure a streamlined fit between the bathroom wall and unit.
5. Warm Grey Accents
In this medium-sized bathroom, the dark-grey accents on the worktop, overhead storage unit, and outer panels of the tallboy create an inviting space. The grey bath panels complement the space, allowing the grey tallboy to become the main attraction.
Varying tones of white and grey visually combine to make this bathroom appear expansive, accentuating its generous dimensions. Three different shades of grey – slate grey, silver grey and platinum grey – of the Grove 1500mm Basin and Toilet Combination Grey Vanity Unit combine in stylish ways to create contrasts and highlight specific elements in the bathroom. The room's bright lighting creates a neutral colour scheme.
6. Total Grey Out
This fully grey bathroom stays on theme, as two contrasting shades of grey – slate grey on the sidewalls and dark grey on the backsplash – are used with generous splashes of white. The colour of the worktop of this fitted furniture complements the colour of the backsplash. And the large square tiles on the backsplash accentuate the eye-catching mirror cabinets and wall storage units.
You simply cannot go wrong with the white and grey Oliver 1900 Fitted Furniture Suite, which provides endless amounts of storage space. As the accents are minimal, the bathroom feels sleek and uncluttered.
7. Monochrome Grey and Black Bathroom
You can also use a black vanity unit as a beautiful source of colour for your bathroom. This vanity unit, featuring a smooth charcoal black finish, complements the black small tile backsplash to perfection. The four shelves provide generous storage space, enhancing the bathroom's functionality.
Also, the black shower enclosure and grey towel radiator coordinate with the black vanity unit, presenting a cohesive and continuous appearance. This black-and-grey fixture combination is ideal for bold, contemporary bathrooms.
8. Add Natural Textures
Adding natural textures, such as wood and stone, will soften the look of your space. For instance, you can incorporate grey with raw or organic materials like a sleek stone basin or a narrow-width wooden tallboy to enhance the minimalist aesthetic.
The advantage of wood furniture in your bathroom is that it adds instant warmth. Wooden shelving is an effortless natural texture that doesn't date quickly, ensuring timeless appeal. A wooden chair or stool also makes for a smart choice, as it works across styles.
9. Skylights or Roof Windows
Natural light can dramatically alter the perception of certain colours. Grey is unique in that it virtually glows, creating a calm and understated atmosphere.
Lighter shades of grey will reflect light, making your space feel more open, airy, and inviting. The bath panels directly below the skylight will reflect the maximum natural light, brightening the entire room.
The grey-and-white Pemberton Grey Shower Bath Suite with Combination Vanity Unit and WC blends sophistication and harmony.
The Jivana Straight Bath Suite with Grey Vanity & Toilet will shine brightly in natural light, elevating your space.
10. Grey Bathrooms with Freestanding Baths
A touch of white against a grey backdrop will always work well.
The combination of a standalone white bath with grey walls and large grey floor tiles will create a luxurious centrepiece. The white colour of the freestanding bath can anchor the overall colour scheme.
In addition, the flow of natural light through the large glass window will strike the perfect balance.
11. Grey and Wood Contrast
Natural elements like oak or walnut work well in softening the look of grey. In this context, a stylish blend of grey and wood is a great choice for creating a fresh and inviting space.
The Sonix 900 Grey Wall Hung Unit with Oak Countertop offers a warm, organic variation to the modern design. The solid oak worktop will add a touch of elegance to your bathroom.
12. Industrial Style Bathroom
Dark grey tones are perfectly suited to industrial-style bathrooms. However, modern, minimalist grey fixtures are simply not suitable for achieving the industrial aesthetic you desire.
An effortless way to obtain an industrial aesthetic is to opt for a combination of slate grey walls with exposed pipework, matte black fixtures, and raw concrete textures. These elements are the characteristic features of an industrial-style bathroom.
The Jasmine 700mm End Bath Panel in Matt Black can be cut to non-standard bath sizes. The premium-quality, reinforced wood core panels are highly durable.
The Oliver 1300 Matt Black Fitted Furniture is a compact combination fixture set with a toilet, basin, and storage.
13. Grey Tiles with Pattern or Texture
A patterned grey tile feature wall is a stunning way to add depth and visual interest to your space. Alternatively, you can use patterned grey tiles on the floor.
Choosing the right style of tile for your space is key. Whether it's an attractive herringbone design, a striking geometric pattern, or an elaborate antique star pattern, a well-placed feature wall can create a timeless look.
A feature wall behind the vanity will not only safeguard it against water damage but also act as a statement splashback.
In the shower enclosure, grey tiles with pattern will add depth and contrast, while behind a freestanding bath, they create a focal point.
14. Grey and Brass Luxury Look
A grey wall background with brass or gold accents adds warmth and sophistication, creating a luxurious finish.
Introduce brushed brass towel rails, mirror frames, or gold taps to contrast with soft grey cabinetry and wall colour.
Choosing the right fixtures and fittings is only part of the design project. Getting them all to blend nicely with the grey wall is what will make your whole bathroom feel pulled together.
You don't need to pick identical bathroom fittings. Ideally, the towel rail will anchor the look. You can build in contrast through clever placement of the other fittings.
15. Small Grey Cloakroom Inspiration
Grey is ideal for small cloakrooms.
The sleek and chic Slimline Grey Vanity Unit with Toilet & Basin fulfils essential needs with storage space, blending functionality with style. You can also use a light grey wall colour to open up the compact space.

What Is an Ensuite Bathroom? Everything You Need to Know
What Is an Ensuite Bathroom?
The French words en suite mean “in harmony” or “in sequence”. Hence, it follows that an ensuite bathroom is typically attached to a bedroom and can be accessed only via the bedroom.
An ensuite is a private bathroom connected directly to a bedroom. Since access to an ensuite bathroom is restricted, it's a practical, convenient, and functional option that also safeguards your privacy.
Ensuite bathrooms are great for privacy. In most homes, you'll find an ensuite bathroom attached to the master bedroom. The chief advantage of an ensuite bathroom is that its location offers an unparalleled level of privacy, making you feel truly special.
This detailed guide explains the benefits of an ensuite bathroom, its features and requirements, how much it costs to install one, and how to design one.

Benefits of Having an Ensuite Bathroom
People love ensuite bathrooms due to the ease of access they offer. You only need to leave your bed and take a few steps to enter your personal space.
Having a private space presents you with an improved lifestyle. For instance, you can get ready in the morning when you want – sooner or later – without worrying about other family members' schedules.
Nothing beats the convenience of having an undisturbed place for relaxation. You can focus on hair care, skin care, and self-care, helping you prioritise your well-being in peace.
An ensuite bathroom can also significantly increase the value of your home, as a prospective homebuyer will view it as a premium feature. An ensuite will add valuable living space, making your home more appealing. According to a special report of the Nationwide House Price Index, an ensuite can increase the value of a house by 6%.
Ensuite Vs. Other Bathroom Types
Ensuite Vs. Private Bathroom
An ensuite and a private bathroom differ in placement within a home and access to the toilet and shower or bath.
An ensuite is directly attached to a bedroom. But a private bathroom may be dedicated to a single room without being directly connected to it.
While you can access the toilet and shower or bath from within your room in an ensuite bathroom, you can only access them from outside your room in a private bathroom.
Ensuite Vs. Shared Bathroom
An ensuite bathroom can be accessed only by the occupants of the bedroom connected to it. However, a shared bathroom can be accessed by multiple people from various bedrooms, as it's not attached to a specific bedroom.
An ensuite bathroom offers exclusive privacy and is also easier to maintain compared to a shared bathroom, as fewer people use it.
Ensuite Bathroom Features and Requirements
Does an Ensuite Always Have a Toilet?
An ensuite bathroom will always have a toilet. The standard practice in the UK is for an ensuite to have a toilet.
Does an Ensuite Have to Have a Shower?
No. While an ensuite doesn't need to have a shower, it typically does. The only reason an ensuite won't have a shower is if it's too small to fit one in.
Can You Have a Bath in an Ensuite?
Yes, it's possible to have a bath in an ensuite. Most ensuites in UK homes are smaller and mainly designed for showers. However, a bath can be included in the design if there's sufficient space to fit a bath/shower combo unit within the ensuite area.
Space Considerations and Layout Options
An ensuite generally includes fixtures and fittings such as a washbasin, toilet, shower, bath, or a combined basin and toilet unit.
Ensuites come in an assortment of shapes and sizes: narrow, square, or with low ceilings. So, planning an ensuite layout design entails precise measurements.
When you know the exact measurements, it's easier to include all the fixtures and fittings you want while still having enough space to move around.
Consider the placement of the various fixtures at the design stage. Narrow-width fixtures would be ideal for a narrow space. Also, explore different layout options based on the available space – for example, a sliding shower door can help avoid clearance issues in a tight layout.
How Much Does an Ensuite Bathroom Cost?
Installing a new ensuite bathroom (including materials) will cost anywhere between £5,500 and £8,000, depending on the fixtures you choose and their quality. A large/high-end ensuite will cost upwards of £14,000.
Ensuite Bathroom Cost Breakdown:
Final Total: (£2,217 – £3,973) + £1,875 + £816 = £4,908 – £6,664
Factors That Affect the Price
The following are the primary factors that affect the price of an ensuite bathroom:
Size of the ensuite
Structural changes required to create the ensuite
Quality of fixtures and fittings
Complexity of plumbing and electric work
Local labour costs
Type of materials used (sanitary ware and tiles)
How to Design an Ensuite Bathroom
Designing an ensuite bathroom involves careful planning of the placement of the toilet, washbasin, and shower in the available space.
The design you choose should ensure that the fixtures are installed in such a way that functionality is maximised without compromising on convenience and comfort.
Our guide on Inspiring Ensuite Bathroom Ideas will help you design the perfect ensuite bathroom.
FAQs About Ensuite Bathrooms
What's the Smallest Space for an Ensuite?
The smallest practical size for an ensuite bathroom in the UK is approximately 0.8m x 1.8m (around 1.44 square metres). This compact layout can typically accommodate a toilet and a corner or wall-hung basin, and in some cases, a small shower cubicle if planned carefully.
To make the most of small spaces:
Choose space-saving fixtures like a combined basin and toilet unit.
Use a sliding shower door to avoid clearance issues.
Do I Need Planning Permission for an Ensuite?
In most cases, you do not need planning permission to install an ensuite bathroom, especially if you're not extending the building or altering its external structure. However, you will likely need to follow building regulations, particularly for:
Plumbing and waste drainage
Ventilation and electrical work
Pro tip: always check with your local council or building control office before starting the work.
Are Ensuite Bathrooms Worth the Investment?
Yes, adding an ensuite bathroom is widely considered a smart investment, especially for master bedrooms. We've mentioned above that an ensuite bathroom can boost your home's value by up to 6%.
If your home has only one bathroom, adding an ensuite can also significantly improve everyday functionality and comfort. This might increase the appeal to buyers and renters, especially in family homes.

What Different Types of Baths Are There?
Before ordering your new bath, you need to understand the four different types of baths. Only then will you know which one will suit your space best.
Shower Baths
A shower bath blends luxury and convenience. A unique feature of this remarkable piece of dual-function – bathtub and shower – design is it does away with the necessity for separate shower and bath units.
Evidently, shower baths are more suitable for smaller bathrooms. Rather than having two separate units, homeowners can combine the functionalities of a bath and shower in a smaller area. This makes the popularity of shower baths on the rise, because most bathrooms in modern homes cannot accommodate a separate bath and shower enclosure.
Pros of Shower Baths
A shower bath is a boon in a small bathroom because it eliminates the need to pick either a bath or a shower. With this space-saving fixture, you can have the best of both worlds.
A shower bath is a must-have in any home with children, as the bath can be filled partially to bathe them first. Later, the shower can be used to rinse away the shampoo and soap suds.
Cons of Shower Baths
Shower baths are built for both lying down and standing in. But some models may not be comfortable for your back, especially when you intend to enjoy a long soak. This downside is due to the reduction in their size, the extra taps, and the shower panel.
A shower bath can be high-maintenance because, with double the use, the cleaning responsibility is also doubled. After every use, you'll need to rinse both the bath and shower to get rid of soap scum, hair, and debris.
Next, let's look at the two types of shower baths.
a. L-Shaped Bath
An L-shaped bath provides you with an indulgent bathing experience and adds a magnificent touch to your bathroom. This shower bath is available in four sizes: 1500mm, 1670mm, 1700mm, and 1800mm. It's slightly deeper at the showering end, where you stand.
b. P-Shaped Bath
A P-shaped bath has an infill in the extended part that reduces the amount of water required to fill the bath. However, the amount of usable bath space is not reduced. This feature gives you extra space for showering. Both left- and right-handed options are available.
Freestanding Baths
A freestanding bath, as the name suggests, is a bathtub that stands alone and needs space on all sides. This bathroom fixture is a separate piece that not only creates a stunning focal point but also adds a touch of personality.
Due to its larger dimensions, a freestanding bath is more comfortable to bathe in than the other types of baths. While some variants can fit in a small space, most models can be accommodated only in large bathrooms.
Before you buy a freestanding bath, you also need to consider that this unit is heavy – and it gets heavier when it's filled with water and a person steps in.
Pros of Freestanding Baths
The high aesthetic quality of a freestanding bath can transform your space into a camera-ready bathroom. Also, the sleek design of a standalone bath is incredibly gorgeous.
A freestanding bath presents you with considerable flexibility in placement. You can place it anywhere, even directly under a skylight in the centre of the bathroom.
Cons of Freestanding Baths
Bigger models with a greater depth pose a safety risk for kids. While placing a non-slip mat inside the bath and one on the floor outside can help, the depth of the bath poses a serious risk, especially when filled to the brim.
The space under a freestanding bath is hard to clean, as water and dirt can get trapped here. As a result, you'll need to scrub this area more thoroughly.
Next, let's look at the two types of freestanding baths.
a. Slipper Baths
A slipper bath is elegant and beautiful. The main functionality of this deep-soaking bathtub is that it retains heat and allows you to wallow in warm water for long hours.
The availability of slipper baths in a broad range of styles and designs makes them suitable for almost all bathrooms.
b. Roll Top Baths
A roll top bath makes the ultimate statement in a traditional bath style. If you want to enjoy a truly luxurious bathing experience every day, this bathtub is the right one for you. This freestanding bath is equally at home in both traditional and contemporary settings.
Corner Baths
Corner baths maximise space in the tiniest of bathrooms and add an element of charm as well. If your bathroom has a tricky layout, this bath will work well. And since you can fit this bath in both left- and right-handed positions, it provides you with supreme convenience.
A corner bath can effortlessly fit into odd and unused corners of your bathroom. This feature can be especially useful in a hexagonal- or irregular-shaped bathroom. Hence, corner baths are best for bathrooms that are tiny or of unconventional shapes. Larger models will work well in mid-sized bathrooms.
Pros of Corner Baths
In terms of ergonomics and compactness, a corner bath is the best. It's impossible to find a more effective space-management solution. This bath can transform even a tiny bathroom, making it appear more luxurious and spacious.
A corner bath fits perfectly in any irregular-shaped bathroom. Since this highly functional bath is designed to fit into corners, it frees up more floor space.
Cons of Corner Baths
The major drawback of a corner bath is the limitation in its placement. You can place this bath only in corners – it will look out of place in the centre of your bathroom.
A corner bath is more challenging to clean compared to other types of baths, as you'll need to reach further to clean the corners.
Whirlpool Jacuzzi Baths
A bath fitted with whirlpool jets is known as a whirlpool Jacuzzi bath. The main feature of a whirlpool Jacuzzi bath is that it provides you with luxurious relaxation. This bathtub is all about luxury, comfort, and extravagance.
Since these baths are available in an assortment of sizes, shapes, and configurations, you can easily find one that matches your style, taste, and personality to perfection.
While some corner whirlpool Jacuzzi bath models can fit in small bathrooms, the larger models are suitable for medium-sized bathrooms. As these baths occupy a larger area, they are ideal for bathrooms with larger dimensions.
Our Ultimate Guide to Whirlpool Baths is a great resource to help you understand everything you need to know about whirlpool Jacuzzi baths.
Pros of Whirlpool Jacuzzi Baths
A whirlpool Jacuzzi bath offers significant health benefits. The positive health trade-offs of water-based treatments – technically termed hydrotherapy – have been valued for thousands of years.
A whirlpool Jacuzzi bath can add to your home's resale value, especially if it's in a premium location.
Cons of Whirlpool Jacuzzi Baths
A whirlpool Jacuzzi bath is a high-maintenance bath. Other than cleaning the interior of the bath to ensure there are no stray hairs and soap residue, you'll also need to clean the whirlpool jets after every use.
A whirlpool Jacuzzi bath is large, bulky, and expensive. It's difficult to install on your own and needs professional installation.
Bath Types by Size
Large Baths
Large baths present you with a blissful bathing experience, whether you're considering a double-ended bath for two people or a single-ended bath just for you.
The main advantage compared to a small bath is you are not cramped for space. A large bath provides sufficient space to stretch and relax your body.
If you are over 6ft tall, you'll need to seriously consider an oversized bath, as it would offer maximum comfort. Large baths are available in a huge range of designs from top brands, with cost-effective options that mirror the same quality also available.
Small Baths
Small baths are suitable for everyone – adults and children alike.
Compared to other baths, a small bath is the easiest to install. You have a lot more freedom, as you don't need to worry about free space around the bath or proximity to adjacent walls.
Also, elderly people and young children will find it easier to bathe in a small bath. Since elderly people need assistance during bathing, and young children will find it difficult to use a shower, a small bath offers an effective solution.
Bath Types by Material
While many materials are used for manufacturing bathtubs, the following materials are the most popular:
a. Acrylic Baths
Acrylic is a cost-effective and durable material. Acrylic sheets are manufactured by combining various materials such as petrochemicals, stabilizers, fillers, resins, and appropriate dyes. These sheets are heated to a high temperature and moulded into the shape of a bath. In the final step, the bath is reinforced with fibreglass.
Baths made of acrylic are among the most popular in the current marketplace. With proper maintenance, they can easily last for 10 to 15 years. Acrylic baths are best suited for homeowners who are on a tight budget.
Pros: fast installation, relatively inexpensive, lightweight and durable, strong water-resistant surface, good heat retention, easy to repair.
Cons: the surface is not scratch-resistant, sensitive to chemical cleaning agents, a passable appearance, and it can be squeaky and unstable.
b. Enamelled Steel Baths
Enamelled steel is a hard-wearing and scratch-resistant material. The enamel coating over the steel material ensures that the bath does not rust.
At 150 to 200 lb (68 to 91 kg), enamelled steel baths are twice as heavy as acrylic baths. Therefore, your bathroom floor needs to be sturdy enough to bear this load. Since enamelled steel baths are expensive, they are best suited for homeowners for whom budget isn't a constraint.
Pros: highly durable (lasting 25 to 30 years), exceptionally stable, ultra scratch- and stain-resistant, not susceptible to cracks, easy to clean and maintain, resistant to common chemical cleaning agents.
Cons: installation can be tough and time-consuming, extreme care is needed before installation to prevent surface damage, susceptible to rusting and chipping if not cared for properly, and it tends to lose heat fast as this material is a good conductor.
c. Stone Baths
A stone bath is an install-and-forget fixture that can easily last a lifetime. Since their aesthetic beauty is guaranteed to last for decades, stone baths are a perfect fit for homeowners keen on making a classy and sophisticated addition to their bathrooms. Stone baths are prohibitively expensive, so they are best suited for homeowners who want to make a style statement and have a deep pocket.
Pros: a high-end, luxurious appearance, timeless design, resistant to chipping, durable and highly scratch-resistant, conserves more heat, highly stable.
Cons: a heavy price tag, ultra heavyweight (some models weigh 3,000 lb, so the floor will need reinforcement), difficult to install beyond ground floor level, and a high-maintenance fixture.
d. Carronite Baths
Carronite is a patented manufacturing process from Carron Bathrooms. This triple-layer reinforcement process is the reason all Carronite baths come with a 30-year guarantee.
The main feature of this bath is the Carronite baseboard, which delivers additional stability. The specially formulated finish also increases heat retention. Carronite baths are the perfect choice for homeowners who want to buy an extra-strong bath that will last for decades at a competitive price.
If you need help deciding what to look for when buying Carronite baths, our guide to choosing a bath is worth a read.
Pros: easy installation, an extended 30-year guarantee, superior stability, a strong water-resistant surface, excellent heat retention, and unparalleled strength.
Cons: none – the triple-layer reinforcement process effectively addresses all the drawbacks of acrylic baths.
e. Steel Baths and Cast Iron Bathtubs
While cast iron bathtubs are quite heavy, steel baths are four to five times lighter in weight. Other than the weight factor, there is no major difference between them.
Cast iron is a highly durable material. Also, the thick enamel coating on its surface is resistant to most chemicals, scratching, and chipping. Steel baths and cast iron bathtubs are best suited for homeowners looking to personalise their dream bathrooms.
Pros: highly durable (lasting 25 to 30 years), exceptionally stable, ultra scratch-resistant, crack-resistant, generous bathing space, impact- and abrasion-resistant.
Cons: installation of cast iron bathtubs can be tough, it's difficult to fix plumbing issues if the heavy bathtub needs to be moved, they're vulnerable to rust if not cared for properly, and the hard metal surface is not comfortable to sit in for long periods.
f. Copper Baths
Pure copper is super strong and almost indestructible. A copper bath is made by heating sheets of copper and hammering them into shape.
Maintenance is easy, as you don't need to scrub or polish a copper bath – you'll only need to rinse the bath with water and wipe the surface dry to prevent mineral deposit build-up. Avoid using abrasives, as they can damage the finish.
The beauty of a pure copper bath enhances greatly with age. Since these baths are guaranteed to age gracefully, they're the right choice for homeowners who love sophistication and luxury.
Pros: durable and withstands rust, has several health benefits thanks to its antimicrobial properties, naturally resistant to scratching and chipping, very simple to maintain, can heal itself of small scratches, and retains heat longer.
Cons: installation can be tough as the bath is heavy, fixing plumbing problems isn't easy if the heavy bath has to be moved, and it carries a high price tag.
Conclusion
The bathtub is the focal point of your bathroom, so it's critical to invest in a good-quality bath, as it can easily outlast many future renovation projects.
It makes sense to buy a bath that's beautiful as well as useful. Since a bathtub is a big investment in terms of both space and money, bear in mind that a freestanding bath will occupy more space and cost more than a built-in one. Consider all the factors discussed here before buying a bath.

Detailed Guide to Wall-Hung Vanity Units
A wall-hung vanity unit is a space-saving sink-cupboard combo fitted on the bathroom wall. As the name implies, this floating unit is mounted on the wall with a gap between its bottom and the bathroom floor.
Also known as a floating vanity, this unit is the perfect combination of style, convenience, and functionality. The unit includes drawers, shelves, or both and is available in varied sizes, shapes, materials, and colours.
We are sure you’ll find this detailed guide to wall-hung vanity units helpful in your quest for the perfect fixture for your bathroom. If you're only looking for a wall hung basin option, do check out our Wall Hung Basin Buying Guide.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Navigate to any section of this post by clicking on the links above.
What Are the Measurements for a Wall-Hung Vanity Unit?
The standard wall-hung vanity width ranges vastly – from a minuscule 15.75 inches (400 mm) to a very wide 71.65 inches (1,820 mm). The width depends on the number of basins and available storage space.
You will need to install a wider wall-hung vanity unit at a higher height to ensure a comfortable working height. On the contrary, a narrow-width wall-hung vanity unit can be installed at a slightly lower height without sacrificing functionality.
How to Measure Bathroom Space Accurately to Choose the Right Floating Vanity Size
Take a tape measure and evaluate the available space. Note the width, depth, and height accurately. Consider door swings and space for people to move around the bathroom.
Understand that a large wall-hung vanity or an awkwardly positioned one will not suit even the most beautiful bathroom.
What Is the Ideal Height for a Wall-Hung Vanity Unit from the Floor?
The recommended standard height from the floor to the top of the basin in the UK is typically 79 to 86 cm (31 to 34 inches). But the comfort height for taller people is a few inches higher, so they don’t have to hunch over when using the basin.
A vessel basin sits above the counter and is naturally a few inches higher than an inset basin. Tall people will find using this basin more convenient.
However, a compromise height is the best solution when there’s a notable difference in the height of a couple. For families with young children, a step stool is a practical solution.
The easiest way to balance the height of the wall-hung vanity for ergonomic use is to adjust the basin height to match the users’ comfort, reducing back and neck strain during use.
How High Should a Floating Vanity Be?
The recommended height from the bathroom floor to the bottom of the wall-hung vanity unit to create a “floating” effect should typically be 12 to 18 inches (30 to 46 cm), depending on the style and dimensions of the vanity and the desired aesthetic.
Ideally, the floor underneath the vanity should be visible. Also, a gap of 12 inches will give you sufficient clearance for cleaning under the vanity. Anything less than this – say 8 or 9 inches – will not be effective in achieving a visually pleasing “floating” effect.
How Much Does It Cost to Install a Floating Vanity?
The Installation Cost in the UK
The average installation cost of a wall-hung vanity unit in the UK ranges between £150 and £300. This cost can vary depending on the dimensions, design, and difficulty of the installation.
Installing a floating double vanity or a wall-hung vanity with additional fixtures, such as a matching mirror cabinet or tallboy, can cost considerably more.
Other Factors That Could Affect the Installation Cost of a Floating Vanity:
Removal and disposal of old vanity unit
Extensive changes in the plumbing setup
Need for new electrical outlets or lighting fixtures
Structural changes to the bathroom wall
Finishing touches, such as sealing and caulking
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Are Wall-Hung Vanities a Good Idea?
Yes, wall-hung vanities are a good idea, as the clean lines and floating effect of these units create a sense of spaciousness, making your bathroom appear larger and more airy.
These space-saving fixtures maximise floor area while also providing generous storage. The streamlined basin area will create an organised and clutter-free appearance.
Do You Tile Behind a Wall-Hung Vanity?
Tiling behind a wall-hung vanity is purely a matter of preference. Tiling the entire area will present your bathroom with a seamless finish while tiling only around the wall-hung vanity will result in potential cost and time savings.
Tiling behind the vanity also provides an additional layer of waterproofing, ensuring potential water damage is minimised.
Will My Wall Support a Floating Vanity?
The weight of a floating vanity, including the items stored in it, can range from 50 to 150 kg (110 to 330 pounds).
A solid wall, such as a brick or block wall, will easily support a floating vanity. Likewise, concrete/prefabricated walls can also support a floating vanity.
A plasterboard or partition wall cannot support a heavy floating vanity.
Similarly, if your bathroom has a stud wall (plasterboard over a frame), it will need to be reinforced for securely mounting a floating vanity.
How Do You Secure a Wall-Hung Vanity?
Check wall suitability first. Next, locate the wall studs using a stud finder or by gently tapping on the wall. Mark the positions of the wall studs.
Attach the sturdy wall-hung vanity mounting brackets securely to the wall studs using appropriate screws. Using a spirit level, check whether the brackets are perfectly horizontal and level.
Lift the wall-hung vanity and align the mounting points or hooks on its rear side with the mounting brackets. Once the vanity is set in place properly, tighten the brackets to fasten the unit to the wall.
Are Wall-Hung Vanity Units Safe?
Yes, definitely. The only prerequisite for wall-hung vanity units is they need secure wall installation.
The superior aesthetic appeal and space-saving benefits of wall-hung vanity units far outweigh potential lesser storage space compared to floor-standing vanity units.

Wet Wall vs Tiles: The Better Alternative?
When it comes to choosing the wall finish in your bathroom, tiles might seem like the obvious choice. However, wet wall panels have become a more popular choice in recent years. You may find that installing a wet wall as an alternative to tiles is an ideal solution for your bathroom needs.

What Is a Wet Wall?
A wet wall, hydro panel, or shower wall is a large panel that will fully waterproof the wall area around your shower, bath, sink, or any area that you would ordinarily tile.
Wet wall panels come in a variety of sizes. They present you with a multitude of advantages: they are easy to install and do not need to be grouted. You can also cut them to your specific bathroom size and needs. All these features make wet walls easy to maintain and keep looking new.
For What Type of Bathroom Is a Wet Wall Best?
Wet Wall is a fairly modern concept. Hence, a wet wall is a perfect fit for a contemporary bathroom suite. However, with an assortment of modern and traditional patterns available, you can use it for any style of bathroom.
Some of the wet wall finishes include organic looks such as stone, slate, and marble, as well as stylish designs that incorporate elements like glitter.
What Sizes Do Wet Wall Panels Come In?
Wet wall panels usually come in sizes such as 2420mm x 590mm (95.27in x 22.23in), 2420mm x 900mm (95.27in x 35.43in), and 2420mm x 1200mm (95.27in x 47.24in).
They come in several other sizes, as well. You can cut a wet wall panel to any size and height to fit your bathroom dimensions.
How Many Wet Wall Panels Do You Need for a Bathroom?
The average dimension of a bathroom in a UK home is 2.4m x 1.8m (7.87ft x 5.90ft). The average floor-to-ceiling height is 9ft. So the area to be covered by wet wall panels would be 7.87 x 9 x 2 (141.66) + 5.9 x 9 x 2 (106.2) = 247.86 sq.ft.
You can calculate the exact area by subtracting the area of the bathroom door (6.5ft x 2.5ft) and window (3ft x 1.5ft) from this figure. That would be 16.25 sq.ft. and 4.5 sq.ft., or let’s say 20 sq.ft. The exact area to be covered by wet wall panels would be approximately 247.86 – 20 = 227.86 sq.ft.
The average dimension of a medium-sized wet wall panel is 7.94ft x 2.95ft, and the area it would cover is 23.42 sq.ft. Hence, you’ll need 10 medium-sized (or 8 large-sized) wet wall panels for an average-sized bathroom.
How Long Do Wet Wall Panels Take to Dry?
The installation of wet wall panels is a relatively dry process compared to the installation of bathroom tiles, which needs at least two wet stages.
The panel adhesive is a lot less messy too. However, you’ll need to allow at least 24 hours for the sealant to cure completely before installing other bathroom accessories.
Is It Possible to Paint Wet Wall Panels?
Yes, you can paint wet wall panels since they are made from plastic or vinyl.
The advantage is you can change the appearance of the panels without losing any of the core waterproofing properties. However, you’ll need to use strict paint application methods.
What Are the Benefits of Using a Wet Wall?
A wet wall is 100% waterproof, and hence ideal for wet areas.
It is cost-effective and quicker to install as compared to tiles. It requires an average of 1–2 hours, whereas tiling can take up to 2 days.
It is a fast, easy fit and is easy to keep clean due to the lack of grouting, which is a necessity with tiling.
A Wet wall is also a low-maintenance and hygienic choice, less likely to cause a bad odour or growth of mould in the bathroom.
Wet walls are durable and come with a range of domestic use warranties starting from 1-year, 5-year, 10-year, and 15-year options.
What Is the Price Range of Wet Wall Panels?
At Bathroom City, wet wall panels come in a wide price range, starting from £85 per laminate coating panel, and going up to £189 for MDF panels, £269 for engineered polymer panels, and £895 for premium acrylic panels.
Wet Wall Versus Tiles: The Better Alternative?
Tiles may be a more suitable choice if your bathroom suite has a traditional or period design. They require more regular maintenance than wet walls/shower walls, as grout can harbour mildew and mould.
Ultimately though, well-maintained tiles may last longer than wet walls.
That said, wet wall panels are much easier and cheaper to replace than tiles, as well as require less effort to install. This makes installing a wet wall a great way to update and change the entire look of your bathroom suite.
Finally, depending on your personal taste, the rest of the appearance of your suite, and the amount of money and effort you are willing to put into decorating your bathroom, there is no real right or wrong answer. Wet walls or tiles, the choice is yours!

How to Clean and Maintain your Shower Enclosure?
Cleaning a shower enclosure is a thankless job. Even at Bathroom City, we are yet to meet a customer or even a member of staff who can honestly say they enjoy undertaking it. That’s mainly because shower enclosures tend to accumulate soap scum and grime every day. And unfortunately, the truth is it’s a job that has to be done because leaving it can significantly affect not just the condition of your bathroom, but also the condition of your health and well-being.
It’s been reported by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that a mouldy shower environment increases your chances of catching colds, sore throats and even eye and skin irritation. This means making sure your enclosure is clean should be considered as a valued necessity.
We have some good news. When you use the right cleaning method, your shower enclosure can repel soap scum and remain clean longer. And you can use the same process for cleaning both glass and plastic components of a shower enclosure – using either commercial or natural cleaning agents.

General Steps for Cleaning a Shower Enclosure
Wipe and dry your shower unit with a soft dry towel after using it. This will help you get rid of hard water deposits on a daily basis. Although perhaps not the first thing on your mind after showering, this simple activity that takes a few moments will help you in the long run.
Use Glass Cleaner. At the slightest evidence of a build-up of deposits on the shower glass, spray glass cleaner onto the glass and leave for a minute.
Using a paper towel, rub the glass cleaner into the sprayed areas and wipe the shower glass dry.
What Are the Best Market Products for Cleaning a Shower Enclosure?
1. Astonish Daily Shower Self Cleaner 750ml
This low-priced, quick and easy daily cleaning liquid is perhaps the best product for cleaning your shower enclosure. This cleaning solution is highly convenient because there’s no scrubbing involved as you simply spray and forget. The solution quickly dissolves soap scrum and watermarks, resulting in a crystal clear shine. The main benefit is regular usage prevents the build-up of limescale. This vegan solution is suitable for use on the other shower enclosure accessories such as plastic wheels of the shower door, enamel tray, glass screens, tiles and vinyl curtains.
2. Clean Shower Daily Shower Cleaner Spray
If you hate scrubbing, you’ll really love this cleaning solution. After a shower, you spray a light mist of this premium product and simply walk away. Yes, that’s right. You can clean your shower cubicle – whether it’s a walk-in shower cubicle or corner shower cubicle – minus the rubbing, wiping, rinsing and squeegeeing. This product is especially effective in hard water areas. The only drawback is this cleaner spray is not suitable for use on natural stone and marble. Please note this point before you place your order.
3. Mr Muscle Platinum Shower Shine 750ml
This daily shower enclosure cleaner is yet another low-priced product that eliminates scrubbing, rinsing or wiping. Yes, you just spray and walk away. This convenient spray is effective in preventing the build-up of soap scum, grime, grout and limescale on the various surfaces in your shower enclosure. You can use this versatile shower cleaner on acrylics, plastics, fibreglass, chrome, porcelain, glass, tiles and shower curtains.
4. HG 147050106 Shower & Washbasin Spray
This everyday bathroom cleaner is suitable for plastic shower cubicles, tiled walls and washbasins. This spray works on all bathroom surfaces, including marble, granite, travertine, enamel and natural stone. A convenient refill bottle makes this product even more affordable. Using it is simple, too. Spray the surface of the shower enclosure and leave it to work for a few minutes. Rinse the surface thoroughly with water.
5. Mellerud Shower Cubicle Clean and Care
This premium product makes the shower cubicle surfaces hygienically clean in an easy two-step process. This spray is suitable for use on shower enclosures made from glass, plastic or aluminium. You can use it on shower partitions and curtains, as well. After showering, spray a light mist and rinse off with water.
How to Clean the Shower Door Glass Without Scratching or Causing Damage?
A natural way of cleaning the shower door glass would be by mixing a tablespoon of baking soda with water to make a thick paste. The next step is to scrub the glass surface using a nonabrasive sponge. And the last step is to rinse the glass with vinegar until it sparkles. (Since undiluted vinegar can cause skin burns, it’s safer to wear gloves.)
If you hate scrubbing, there’s an equally effective alternative cleaning solution. The Method Glass Cleaner Spray (828 ML) simply makes cleaning your shower door glass a breeze. You spray the solution on the glass surface and wipe immediately with a soft dry towel.
How to Clean a Shower Door Glass with Protective Coating?
For glass with a protective coating, you should be careful. Don’t use any product that has ammonia, hydrofluoric acid or phosphoric acid as an ingredient. And avoid using any sharp object, abrasive brush or razor blade that may scratch the protective coating. A natural way of cleaning the shower door glass with protective coating would be by using vinegar. Wipe the glass with a Scotch-Brite Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge dipped in vinegar. Then, rinse the glass surface clean with water.
Since you cannot wipe and rinse the shower door glass after each showering, an easier solution to cleaning glass with protective coating is using Clean Shower Cleaner Shower Daily Spray. As mentioned above, you can get a sparkle minus the wiping and rinsing. And you can use this premium cleaner to clean the whole shower cubicle – whether it’s a walk-in shower cubicle or corner shower cubicle.
How to Clean the Shower Door Tracks?
Unlike a walk-in shower cubicle, a corner shower cubicle has a sliding door. And shower door tracks can be the most difficult part of the shower enclosure to clean because soap scum and dirt tend to accumulate there. Door tracks are also the most neglected section of a shower enclosure.
The natural way – and, of course, the most effective way – of cleaning door tracks is by using readily available household cleaning supplies: old toothbrush, one tablespoon of lemon juice and two tablespoons of salt. Make a smooth paste by mixing lemon juice and salt. Use the old toothbrush to apply this paste inside all the inaccessible parts of the sliding rolls. Wait for 15 minutes, and rinse the dirt off with warm water. If necessary, repeat this process.
How to Clean the Shower Enclosure Drain?
Cleaning the shower enclosure drain is a tough task. Ideally, if you do it once a month, your drain will not get clogged and the water in the shower enclosure will drain properly. Although a chemical drain cleaner is quick and effective, we don’t recommend it because the harsh chemicals can damage your plumbing lines. So, we recommend you to do this the natural way following the steps detailed here.
Step 1: Wear rubber gloves. Remove the shower drain cap. First, you’ll need to remove physical blocks like hair. Use a drain snake for this. A thin wire coat hanger is an effective alternative.
Step 2: Remove the initial debris, using your fingers. Next, slip in the movable end of the drain snake carefully and push it down the drain. With a slight twisting motion, move the end forward so that snake winds down the drain.
Step 3: Tug upwards gradually. Pull the blocking debris out, and put this in a plastic bag.
Step 4: If necessary, repeat this process. Ensure all the blockages have been cleared.
Step 5: In this extra step, you’ll need to use 1 tbsp of baking soda and some vinegar to clear any remaining debris. Pour the baking soda down the shower drain. Next, pour some distilled white vinegar. A fizzing sound signals that the remaining blockages are being cleared.
Step 6: Wait for 30–40 minutes. Pour half a bucket of hot water into the shower drain to flush the mixture. Replace the shower drain cap.
If you think all this is too much work, then the alternative is Mr Muscle Max Gel Unblocker or Scotch Corporation Liquid Drain Opener. These unclogging liquids do the same work in a jiffy, presenting you with an easy solution.
How to Clean the Shower Enclosure Wall or Floor tiles?
Dirty wall tiles and floor tiles are not just a health issue, but they are a serious embarrassment, as well. Scrubbing the tiles is the best method of cleaning, but this process can take a lot of time. If you have the time and if your tiles are not made of natural stone, then you can use lemon juice for cleaning wall or floor tiles. There is no scrubbing involved in this process. First, spread lemon juice uniformly on the stubborn spots on tiles. Then, let it stand for two hours. Last of all, wipe with a soft cloth and rinse the tiles thoroughly.
How to Clean a Shower Enclosure with Commonly Available Home Food Preparation Products Such as Vinegar and Baking Soda?
A mixture of vinegar and baking soda is a practical solution for cleaning most surfaces. But this mixture should never be used on natural stone as it will leave a discolouration spot. And using them individually is more effective than using them together. The reason is combining them and bottling them can neutralise the effects, producing mainly water and some sodium acetate. Hence, you can make a thick paste by mixing baking soda with water. Wear rubber gloves and apply this paste uniformly over the surface of the shower enclosure you want to clean. Let it stand for a few minutes before wiping the surface with a clean, soft towel dipped in vinegar. Rinse the surface thoroughly with water.
How often should you clean your Shower Enclosure?
Ideally, you should clean your shower enclosure once a week to prevent mildew growth and unwanted stains from building up. But if you miss your weekly bathroom clean up, you’ll need to work harder during the subsequent week. If you’re dependent on the spray-and-forget method for cleaning your shower enclosure on a daily basis, you’ll need to rinse the shower enclosure once a week after you spray. Focus on the showerhead and the shower unit as well as the wall tiles.
