- Traditional Vanity Units
Traditional Vanity Units
A traditional vanity unit is the piece that sets the tone for the whole bathroom. Panelled doors, turned legs, period-inspired hardware and painted finishes give it the feel of a well-made piece of furniture — not a bathroom cabinet. Our range covers freestanding designs in widths from 500mm to 1200mm, with ceramic basins that match the proportions and detailing of the unit beneath.
Every unit is built with moisture-resistant materials, soft-close hinges and adjustable internal shelving, so the craftsmanship you see on the outside is matched by practical engineering on the inside. Choose from matt white, ivory, sage green, charcoal and natural oak in styles that suit Victorian terraces, Edwardian semis, cottages and contemporary homes looking for a touch of warmth.
Traditional vanity units — furniture that belongs in a bathroom
The best traditional vanity units don't look like bathroom products — they look like pieces of furniture that happen to house a basin. That's the point. A well-made traditional vanity unit brings the same care, proportion and material quality you'd expect from a hallway console or a bedroom chest of drawers into a room that's often furnished as an afterthought. When the vanity unit has presence, the rest of the bathroom follows.
Freestanding design
Traditional vanity units are freestanding by nature. Standing on turned legs, bracket feet or a solid plinth, they sit against the wall as independent pieces rather than being fixed to it. This gives them a visual weight and character that wall-hung units can't replicate — they ground the room and create a natural focal point beneath the mirror. Freestanding construction also simplifies installation, with no need for structural wall reinforcement. Plumbing connects through the back or base of the unit, and most models include pre-cut or template holes for pipework routing.
Panelled doors and drawer detailing
The door and drawer fronts are where a traditional vanity unit earns its character. Raised or recessed panels with bevelled edges, beaded frame profiles and tongue-and-groove detailing all reference period cabinetry and give the unit depth and shadow that flat-fronted modern designs deliberately avoid. These details are what make a traditional vanity unit feel crafted rather than manufactured. Behind the panels, you'll find the same soft-close hinges and adjustable shelving as any contemporary unit — the traditional look doesn't come at the expense of practical function.
Heritage finishes and colours
The finish you choose defines the personality of the room. Matt white is the safe, classic choice — it's bright, clean and pairs with any tile or brassware. Ivory and cream bring warmth and suit bathrooms with natural stone flooring or warmer metallics like brushed brass. Sage green is a perennial favourite for period homes, adding a soft, characterful colour without overwhelming the space. Duck egg blue offers a similar feel with a cooler undertone. Charcoal and heritage grey work well in larger bathrooms where you want the vanity unit to anchor the room with some visual weight. Natural oak and walnut bring texture and warmth for a more rustic or country-house feel. All painted finishes use moisture-resistant lacquers on sealed engineered boards.
Choosing the right basin for a traditional vanity unit
The basin should feel like a natural extension of the unit, not something that's been placed on top of it. Inset ceramic basins with rolled edges, decorative overflows and generous bowls are the most common choice for traditional vanity units — they sit into the countertop with a visible rim that follows the period language of the furniture. Some units pair with a semi-recessed basin that projects slightly forward, giving you a larger bowl without increasing the unit's depth. Countertop basins are less common in traditional schemes but can work with the right shape — a rounded, high-sided ceramic bowl on a natural stone or timber top creates a farmhouse or country-house look.
Hardware — handles, knobs and pulls
The handles on a traditional vanity unit are a small detail with an outsized impact. Cup handles are the most classic option — the half-moon pull that you'd find on a period kitchen dresser or an antique chest of drawers. Round porcelain or metal knobs are simpler and suit smaller units where cup handles might feel too large. Drop handles and ring pulls bring a more formal, Georgian feel. The finish matters as much as the style: brushed brass and antique bronze suit warmer schemes and pair naturally with ivory or green furniture. Polished nickel and chrome work better with cooler palettes, white or grey units and chrome taps. Matching the handle finish to your basin taps is the quickest way to make the room feel intentionally designed.
Sizing a traditional vanity unit for your space
Traditional vanity units tend to have more depth front-to-back than modern wall-hung equivalents — typically 450–500mm compared to 350–400mm — so factor that into your planning, especially in narrower rooms. Widths start at 500mm for cloakrooms and en suites, with 600mm and 650mm being the most popular for standard bathrooms. An 800mm unit gives you counter space and a wider basin, while 1000mm and 1200mm units suit larger rooms and can accommodate double basins or a single basin with generous worktop either side. Always measure the full footprint including any protruding legs or mouldings, and leave clearance for the door or drawer to open fully without hitting the toilet, wall or adjacent furniture.
A traditional vanity unit is a freestanding bathroom cabinet designed to house a basin and conceal plumbing, styled with period-inspired detailing — panelled doors, turned legs, decorative mouldings and heritage paint finishes. Unlike modern vanity units, which favour minimal lines and wall-hung construction, traditional vanity units stand independently on legs or a plinth and bring the look and feel of classic furniture into the bathroom.
Our traditional vanity units are available in widths from 500mm to 1200mm. A 500mm unit suits cloakrooms and small en suites. A 600–650mm unit is the most common choice for a standard bathroom. An 800mm unit gives you more counter space, and 1000–1200mm units work in larger rooms or for double-basin installations. Depths are typically 450–500mm. All dimensions are listed on every product page.
Our traditional vanity unit range includes matt white, ivory, cream, sage green, duck egg blue, charcoal, heritage grey, natural oak and walnut. All painted finishes use moisture-resistant lacquers on sealed engineered boards, designed to withstand bathroom humidity without warping, peeling or swelling. Wood-effect finishes offer the look of real timber with the same moisture protection.
An inset ceramic basin with rolled edges and a decorative overflow is the most natural pairing for a traditional vanity unit — it sits into the countertop with a visible rim that complements the period styling of the furniture. Semi-recessed basins also work well, projecting slightly forward for a larger bowl without adding depth to the unit. The basin should feel proportionate to the unit — a 500mm unit suits a compact bowl, while a 650mm or 800mm unit can carry a wider, more generous basin.
Cup handles are the most classic choice for a traditional vanity unit and reference period kitchen and bedroom furniture. Round knobs (porcelain or metal) suit smaller units or a simpler aesthetic. Drop handles and ring pulls bring a more formal look. For the finish, brushed brass and antique bronze pair well with warmer furniture colours like ivory and sage green. Chrome and polished nickel suit cooler palettes and white or grey units. Matching your handle finish to your basin taps ties the room together.
Traditional vanity units in our range are built specifically for bathroom use. They use engineered boards with sealed edges, moisture-resistant lacquer finishes and water-resistant internal surfaces designed to handle daily exposure to humidity and splashes. They're highly moisture-resistant rather than submersion-proof — as long as standing water isn't left to pool on surfaces and silicone seals are maintained where the unit meets the wall or basin, they'll hold up well for years.
You can, though the result works best when there's a connecting thread. A simple lever-handle tap in chrome or brushed nickel bridges traditional and modern comfortably. A very angular, flat-profiled modern tap may look out of place against heavily detailed panelling. If you want to keep the room firmly traditional, crosshead taps are the natural choice. If you prefer something in between, a lever tap with a curved spout offers a transitional look that suits both directions.
