What is a countertop basin?

It's a sink that sits on top of a vanity unit, worktop, or shelf, rather than being set into it or fixed to the wall. Because the whole bowl is on show, it becomes a design feature in its own right, and it's an easy way to give a bathroom a more boutique, contemporary feel. You'll sometimes hear them called vessel sinks, sit-on basins, or bowl sinks, but they all mean the same thing.

What do I need to fit a countertop basin?

A countertop sink needs three things to work properly.

  • A flat, sturdy surface to sit on, such as a countertop vanity unit or worktop, with a hole cut beneath for the waste.
  • A tap tall enough to reach over the rim of the bowl. Our tall basin taps are made for exactly this, or you can fit one of our wall mounted basin taps above the sink for a cleaner look.
  • A waste that suits the sink. If your sink has no overflow, choose an unslotted waste, and you'll find the right fit in our bathroom wastes and traps.

How high should a countertop basin be?

Because the sink sits on top of the unit, the overall height is the height of your vanity unit plus the height of the bowl. As a guide, most people find a finished height of around 850mm to 900mm comfortable to use. That's why countertop sinks are often paired with slightly lower vanity units, so the rim of the bowl ends up at a natural height for washing your hands and face.

What size countertop basin do I need?

Think about the surface the sink will sit on, and leave a little space either side for a soap dispenser or a small tray. A compact 400mm round or 420mm square bowl suits a cloakroom or a narrow worktop, where every bit of surface space counts. For a main bathroom or ensuite, a sink between 500mm and 620mm wide gives you a more generous bowl for washing your face and brushing your teeth, while still leaving room around it.

Which shape of countertop basin should I choose?

Round and oval bowls have a soft, sculpted look that balances the straight lines of a vanity unit beautifully, and they suit almost any bathroom style. Square and rectangular designs feel crisper and more architectural, and their flat sides give you a little more room for soap. Are countertop basins practical?

They're a lot more practical than their good looks suggest. Because the bowl sits above the surface, it's easy to reach right into every curve when you clean it, with no awkward seals or recesses where dirt can collect. The main thing to remember is splashing. Choose a bowl that's deep enough for the way you use it, position your tap so the water lands in the centre of the bowl, and wipe the surface around the base now and then to keep it looking its best.
