Wall Hung Basins

A wall hung sink seems to float against the wall, leaving the floor beneath completely clear, so even the smallest cloakroom feels open and uncluttered. From a neat 330mm design for the tightest spaces to roomier sizes for the ensuite, it's one of the simplest ways to make a room feel bigger.

What is a wall hung basin?

It's a sink that fixes directly to the wall, with no pedestal or cabinet beneath it, which is why it's often called a floating sink. Keeping the floor clear makes a small room feel noticeably bigger, and it gives you a simple, uncluttered look that works in both modern and classic bathrooms. Pair it with one of our wall hung toilets, and you'll have a floor that's completely clear from wall to wall.

Can any wall take a wall hung basin?

A wall hung sink needs a solid wall behind it, as the wall carries its full weight every time someone leans on it. Brick and block walls are ideal. If you have a stud wall, you'll need to add a timber support or a mounting frame behind the plasterboard before fitting, which a plumber or builder can do quickly. Check whether fixings are included with your sink, as many need a heavy-duty bolt fixing kit to hold them securely.

What size wall hung basin do I need?

It depends on the room and how the sink will be used. Our compact 330mm sink is made for the smallest cloakrooms and understairs toilets, where you only need space to wash your hands. Step up to 410mm or 510mm and you'll have a more comfortable sink for an ensuite or shower room, with room for washing your face and brushing your teeth. For more compact options, take a look at our cloakroom basins.

How high should a wall hung basin be?

One of the best things about a wall hung sink is that you choose the height. For most adults, a rim height of around 800mm to 850mm feels comfortable, but you can fit it lower for children or wheelchair users, or a little higher if everyone in the house is on the tall side. Before you drill, stand in front of the wall and mime washing your hands, then mark where your hands naturally rest.

What happens to the pipework under a wall hung basin?

With nothing to hide it, the waste and pipework beneath a wall hung sink will be on show, so it's worth making it look good. A polished chrome bottle trap gives a neat, put-together finish that suits the open look well, and you'll find options in our bathroom wastes and traps. If you'd rather hide the pipes completely, a semi-pedestal basin keeps the sink off the floor while covering the waste beneath.

Can I add storage to a wall hung basin?

A wall hung sink is all about keeping things open, so storage is best kept nearby, rather than beneath. A slim wall cabinet or mirrored cabinet above the sink holds toiletries, without taking up any floor space. If you'd like storage built in, a wall hung vanity unit gives you the same floating look with drawers or cupboards beneath, with plenty of choice to be found in our wall hung vanity units.
