What is a shower handset?

A shower handset is a handheld shower head on a flexible hose. Lift it from its holder and you can rinse out shampoo, wash young children or pets, or clean the glass without soaking yourself. Some homes use a handset as their only outlet. Others pair it with a fixed overhead shower head for a full soak plus a handheld rinse. You'll find both setups in our range.

Types of shower handsets

Our shower handsets come on their own or as part of a full kit. Here's are the main options:

  • Round shower handsets have a soft, circular face that suits most bathrooms. Our round handset kits come with a slide rail and hose, ready to fit.
  • Square shower handsets have straight edges and a flat face. A square shower handset pairs well with square heads and square shower trays for a crisp, modern finish.
  • Traditional shower handsets have period detailing and a classic rose face (the perforated spray plate). They suit Victorian and Edwardian style bathrooms and sit well next to traditional bathroom taps.
  • Multi-function shower handsets let you switch between spray patterns. Single function handsets keep to one steady spray and are simpler to look after.
  • Handset and concealed inlet sets connect the hose to a neat wall outlet, with the pipework hidden behind the wall. They work well as a second outlet next to a fixed head.

What is a shower kit with fixed head and handset?

A shower kit with fixed head and handset gives you two outlets from one valve. The overhead head covers your whole body for a proper soak. The handset takes care of quick rinses and cleaning the tray.

Our kits include an exposed valve (a valve fitted on the wall surface, so it's easy to reach for servicing), a riser rail, a fixed head, and a handset with hose. Choose from round, square, and traditional designs. Every part comes in the same finish, so nothing clashes.

Do I need a shower handset holder?

Yes. A shower handset holder keeps the handset off the tray floor and angles the spray so you can shower hands-free. There are two main options. A shower riser rail has a sliding bracket, so each person can set the handset to their own height. That helps in a busy family bathroom. A fixed wall holder is smaller and simpler, and some combine the holder with the wall outlet for a tidier look. Many of our handset sets and kits already include a rail or holder, so check the product page before buying one separately.

Will a shower handset fit my shower?

Most UK shower handsets and hoses use a standard ½ inch thread. A new shower handset and hose will fit most mixer showers and bath shower mixer taps. Electric showers are the exception. Some electric models need a handset matched to their flow rate, so check your shower's manual before you swap. On low water pressure, a smaller handset with fewer nozzles gives a firmer spray than a wide one.

What finishes do shower handsets come in?

Our range comes in chrome, matt black, and brushed brass. A chrome shower handset is the easiest to match. It's bright, wipes clean, and sits well next to almost any tap or towel rail. A black shower handset gives sharp contrast against white or pale tiles and suits black bathrooms with an industrial or monochrome feel. A brushed brass shower handset adds warmth, especially next to green, navy, or marble, and its soft sheen hides water marks better than polished finishes. For a joined-up look, match your handset to your taps.

How to replace a shower handset and hose

Swapping a handset and hose is a quick job, and you can usually do it by hand.

  1. Turn the shower off at the valve. Unscrew the hose from the handset and from the outlet, turning anticlockwise.
  2. Clean any limescale off the outlet thread so the new hose sits flat.
  3. Check the rubber washers are in place inside both nuts of the new hose. On most hoses, the cone-shaped nut fits the handset and the flat nut fits the valve or wall outlet.
  4. Screw both ends on hand tight. You won't need PTFE tape (thin thread-sealing tape), as the washers make the seal.
  5. Turn the water back on and check both joints. If one drips, give it a quarter turn more.

How to clean a shower handset

Limescale blocks the nozzles over time and the spray turns patchy. If your handset has rubber nozzles, rub them with your thumb once a week to keep them clear. For a deeper clean, fill a plastic bag with white vinegar, tie it around the handset face, and leave it for an hour. Scrub the nozzles with an old toothbrush, then run the shower for a minute to flush out loose scale. On matt black and brushed brass finishes, check the care instructions first. Acidic cleaners can dull some coatings.
