Choosing a short projection toilet

Projection is the distance from the wall to the front of the toilet pan. Reducing it by even 50mm to 100mm can make the difference between a cramped cloakroom and one you can move around in comfortably.

Short projection close coupled toilets: the cistern sits on the pan as usual, but in a more compact design. The easiest swap for an existing toilet.

Back to wall toilets: the pan sits flush to the wall with the cistern hidden behind furniture or a boxed-in wall, for a cleaner look and a shorter footprint. Pair with a toilet unit for extra concealed storage.

Wall hung toilets: the pan is fixed to a concealed frame, leaving the floor clear underneath. They are usually the most space-saving option and make the floor quick to clean.

What is a short projection toilet?

Projection is the distance a toilet sticks out from the wall to the front of the pan. A short projection toilet is designed to sit closer to the wall than a standard model, so it takes up less floor space. It is an ideal choice for small bathrooms, cloakrooms and en-suites where the toilet is close to a door, basin or shower.

How far does a short projection toilet stick out?

Standard close coupled toilets often project around 650mm to 700mm from the wall. Short projection models bring that down, typically to around 600mm, and wall hung pans can be shallower again. Check the projection listed in the specification of each toilet and measure your space, allowing room in front of the pan to stand and sit comfortably.

Which type of toilet saves the most space?

Wall hung and back to wall toilets usually save the most space because the cistern is hidden in the wall or in furniture, rather than sitting on the pan. Wall hung toilets also leave the floor clear underneath, which makes a small room feel larger and easier to clean. A compact close coupled toilet is the simplest option if you want to keep the cistern visible and avoid boxing in.

Will a short projection toilet fit my existing soil pipe?

It depends on where your soil pipe comes out. Open back close coupled toilets allow more flexibility on pipe position, while back to wall and fully shrouded designs need the soil pipe in a specific position behind the pan. Check the fitting diagram on each product and measure your soil pipe before you buy.

Are short projection toilets comfortable to use?

Yes. A short projection toilet has a shorter pan, not a smaller seat, so it is designed to be comfortable for everyday use. Some models also come in comfort height, which raises the seat slightly to make sitting and standing easier.
