Types of toilets

The right toilet for your room depends on your space, your plumbing and the look you want. Here’s how each type works.

Close coupled toilets: These are the most common type in the UK. The cistern sits on the back of the pan and you can find options with open and closed backs to suit your soil pipe.

Back-to-wall toilets: Sit flush against the wall, with the cistern hidden behind it or inside a furniture unit. The pipework stays out of sight, so cleaning is easier.

Wall-hung toilets: Fixed to the wall with nothing touching the floor, they make a small room feel bigger. Wall-mounted toilets need a wall frame and concealed cistern, so plan ahead.

Rimless toilets: Have no inner lip around the bowl, which is where germs and limescale usually hide. Water flushes the whole pan, and a quick wipe keeps it clean.

Comfort height toilets: Have a taller pan, so sitting down and standing up take less effort. They suit taller people, older users and anyone with limited mobility.

Short projection toilets: Stick out less from the wall than a standard pan. That extra floor space makes a real difference in a narrow cloakroom or galley-style bathroom.

Compact toilets: Have a smaller overall footprint. They’re made for cloakrooms, ensuites and awkward corners where a full-size pan would crowd the room.

Toilet sizes

Our toilets range from about 360mm to 380mm wide. Depth (how far the pan projects from the wall) runs from roughly 530mm on wall-hung pans to 650mm on standard close coupled models. Height varies the most. A wall-hung pan measures about 345mm on its own, while close coupled toilets reach 820mm to 870mm including the cistern. Exact sizes are on each product page. For comfortable use, leave around 600mm clear in front and 200mm either side.

Toilet shapes and styles

Our toilets come in square, round and curved shapes. Square pans have crisp edges that suit modern rooms with straight-lined furniture. Round and curved pans look softer and fit almost any scheme. You can choose modern, industrial or traditional styles. Our traditional toilets include high and low level cisterns for period homes, while modern toilets favour clean lines and simple shapes that suit contemporary bathrooms.

What colours are your toilets available in?

Most of our toilets come in white. It’s easy to match with any tile or furniture finish. If you want something bolder, our range also includes matt black close coupled, back-to-wall and wall-hung models that stand out against pale walls.

What materials are your toilets made from?

Our ceramic toilets are made from vitreous china, which is clay fired at very high temperatures and then glazed. The result is hard, non-porous and resistant to stains, so everyday cleaning is quick. It lasts, too. Most models come with a 5-year guarantee, and selected ranges are covered for 10 or 25 years for added peace of mind.

Can you help with fitting a new toilet?

We don’t offer a fitting service at Bathroom City, but our team can help point you in the right direction. Fitting a toilet means connecting the water supply and soil pipe. A poor seal can leak into the room below. If you’re not completely confident, we recommend using a qualified plumber.
