Types of Vanity Units

Bathroom City's extensive selection of Bathroom Vanity Units is proudly manufactured in the UK. We use premium quality materials, offer competitive prices, and feature unique designs that benefit from sharp attention to detail and fine craftsmanship. We offer various sizes and styles, including:

Freestanding Vanity Units

Freestanding vanity units, also known as floor-standing vanity units, sit flat on the ground. This is the easiest vanity unit to install, as the weight of the unit rests on the floor.

Wall-Hung Vanity Units

Also known as floating vanity units or wall-mounted vanity units, these units are perfect for small bathrooms as they free up the floor space beneath. The entire weight of the unit is borne by the wall. Hence, the bathroom wall needs to be sturdy enough.

Cloakroom Vanity Units

Cloakroom vanity units are relatively small and can be easily accommodated even in small bathrooms. While both freestanding and wall-hung models are available, the latter can maximise floor space.

Corner Vanity Units

Corner vanity units take up less space compared to other units because they are made to fit in bathroom corners. Despite their minuscule dimensions, they provide ample storage space.

Combination Vanity Units

Combination vanity units are primarily toilet and washbasin combos. In this unit, a storage cupboard is also integrated into the toilet and sink combo.

Large Vanity Units

Large vanity units have multiple drawers, shelves, or both, offering generous storage space. They are suitable for large bathrooms.

Double Sink Vanity Units

Double sink vanity units are ideal for multi-tasking as they provide more personal space. Their extra-large dimensions make them a perfect fit for family bathrooms.

Looking for accessories to go with a Vanity Unit? We stock a wide collection of bathroom taps and bathroom mirrors that you can choose from.

If you're considering a larger bathroom remodel, a bathroom suite might be the perfect solution. Complete bathroom suites offer stylish and coordinated fixtures that include a sink, toilet, and often a shower enclosure or bathtub.

At Bathroom City, we offer flexible financing options and Free delivery on all UK mainland orders over £50.

Why Do You Need a Bathroom Vanity Unit?

A bathroom vanity unit essentially provides storage space in your bathroom. This space-saving washbasin and storage space combo can complement the overall aesthetics of your bathroom.

A vanity unit is not just an elegant focal point. This highly-functional unit also allows you to keep all your bathroom essentials within easy reach.

What Are Vanity Units Made From?

Vanity units are mainly made from the following two materials:

Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF)

MDF is produced by binding small fibres of hardwood or softwood with resin and wax. Since high temperature and pressure are involved in the manufacturing process, this material is sturdy and durable.

The smooth surface of MDF can be painted, making it easy to mimic wood.

Melamine Faced Chipboard (MFC)

MFC is produced by blending wood chips and shavings with a strong resin adhesive. The main features of this inexpensive material are it is durable and scratch-resistant.

What Is the Size of a Standard Vanity Unit?

The height of a standard vanity unit is 2.6ft (31in or 790mm). For the last several decades, this has been the typical height of vanity units in most British bathrooms.

In recent years, there has been a shift towards taller vanity units. The comfort height of vanity units stands at around 2.9ft (35in or 890mm).

The following are the standard widths of vanity units: 2ft (24in), 2.5ft (30in), 3ft (36in), 4ft (48in), 5ft (60in), and 6ft (72in).

What is a Vanity Unit?

A vanity unit is a practical under-sink bathroom cabinet that pairs a basin with built-in storage, neatly concealing plumbing while keeping essentials organised. Available in a wide choice of styles and sizes, a bathroom vanity unit creates a tidy, streamlined focal point that elevates any bathroom, ensuite, or cloakroom. Its integrated, moisture-resistant construction ensures long-lasting durability in busy, humid spaces.

What Sizes Do Vanity Units Come In?

Our bathroom vanity units range from 300mm to 1800mm, covering everything from compact cloakroom designs to statement large vanity units. Popular 500–600mm sizes suit standard bathrooms, while larger units from 1000mm upwards offer generous family-friendly surface space and storage. Heights typically range between 800–850mm, and depths generally range from 400–550mm. Always measure carefully to ensure smooth door operation, comfortable access, and a perfect fit around existing fixtures.

What Are the Benefits of Vanity Units?

A vanity unit with a basin is one of the most effective ways to enhance both the functionality and appearance of your bathroom. Some of the main benefits include:

  • Clever Storage – Keep toiletries, cleaning products, and daily essentials tidy inside an under sink cabinet.
  • Concealed Plumbing – Hide pipework for a clean, seamless finish.
  • Design Focal Point – A bathroom vanity becomes a standout feature with options to suit any décor.
  • Extra Surface Space – Ideal for soaps, toothbrush holders, and decorative touches.
  • Simplified Installation – Integrated sink and cabinet design reduces fitting time.
  • Durability – Moisture-resistant materials ensure your bathroom sink unit lasts for years.
What Colours Are Vanity Units Available In?

Our vanity units come in a wide palette to suit every interior. Bright white and soft greys remain timeless favourites, while natural wood tones add warmth to any wooden vanity unit. For bolder impact, navy, green, and deep charcoal shades deliver contemporary drama. Whether you choose a small vanity unit or a large statement sink cabinet, our colour options help you tailor your bathroom vanity to your style.

What Materials Are Vanity Units Made From?

Bathroom vanity units are crafted from durable, moisture-resistant materials built to withstand humid environments. Most feature MDF or MFC cabinetry, offering strength, stability, and beautifully smooth painted or melamine finishes. Many premium designs feature solid timber accents, such as oak or walnut, for added character. Surface options range from high-gloss lacquers to matt textures, alongside modern choices like acrylic fronts and stone-effect or genuine stone worktops. With styles spanning modern, traditional, and transitional, plus a choice of hardware finishes, it’s easy to find a vanity unit that suits your bathroom’s look and lasting performance needs.

How Do You Fit a Vanity Unit?

Fitting a vanity unit starts with isolating the water supply and removing the old basin. Position the new bathroom sink cabinet, ensuring it is level, and mark access points for pipework. Wall-hung vanity units require secure fixing into studs or masonry, while freestanding models may be lightly secured to prevent tipping. Connect the tap and waste plumbing, apply silicone where needed, then test for leaks. For complex installations, professional fitting is recommended.

Do Your Vanity Units Come with a Guarantee?

Most bathroom vanities include a 1–10 year manufacturer's warranty, covering defects in materials and workmanship. At Bathroom City, we also offer a 14-day money-back guarantee on online orders when returned unused and in original packaging. For support, warranty queries, or returns, contact our customer team by calling us on 0121 753 0700 or emailing info@bathroomcity.co.uk.

Wall Hung or Freestanding: Which is Right for My Bathroom?

Wall hung vanity units are fixed to the wall with no floor contact, leaving the floor beneath the unit clear. This makes the bathroom feel more spacious and simplifies cleaning. They require solid wall fixings or a frame behind the wall to take the load. Freestanding vanity units sit on the floor and are simpler to install — they do not require structural wall fixings beyond light bracing for stability. Both styles are available across our full range of widths and finishes. Wall hung suits modern bathrooms and smaller spaces; freestanding suits both traditional and contemporary styles where floor contact is preferred.

What Does a Vanity Unit With Basin Include?

Most vanity units in our range include the basin as standard. Taps and waste fittings are listed separately unless the product description states otherwise. Countertop basin vanity units require a tall basin mixer tap due to the raised basin height. Semi-recessed basins project partially beyond the unit front; fully recessed basins sit flush within the unit top. Worktop options include slate grey, white marble-effect, black slate, and solid oak, depending on the range.

What Size Vanity Unit Do I Need?

Standard vanity unit heights range from 760mm to 815mm for floor-standing designs, with some contemporary wall hung models at around 850mm from floor to basin rim. Standard depths run from 350mm to 500mm. Widths range from 300mm for cloakroom units to 1600mm for wide or double-basin configurations.

The most common single-unit width is 600mm, but you can find both small vanity units and large vanity units. Measure the available wall space, check the depth fits your floor space, and confirm the height works with your plumbing positions before ordering. Our bathroom vanity units height guide covers standard and wall hung height positioning in full.
