What types of bathroom taps are there?

Every tap is made for a particular job, so start with what you’re fitting it to.

  • Basin taps sit on your sink as either a single mixer or a matching pair. A mono mixer blends hot and cold through one spout, while a pair like our Duchess gives you separate hot and cold taps for a classic look.
  • Tall basin taps rise high enough to pour over a countertop bowl, while small basin taps are scaled down for compact cloakroom sinks.
  • Wall mounted basin taps fix to the wall above the sink, leaving the surface completely clear.
  • Bath taps fill the tub from the rim, while bath shower mixer taps add a handheld shower that makes rinsing hair and cleaning the bath far easier.
  • Freestanding taps rise from the floor beside a freestanding bath, creating a real centrepiece in a larger room.
  • Waterfall taps pour water in a wide, gentle sheet rather than a narrow stream.
  • Bidet taps and douche kits are designed for bidets and personal hygiene.

How do I choose the right tap for my sink or bath?

The number of tap holes in your sink or bath decides which tap you need, so count them before you start browsing. One hole takes a single mixer tap. Two holes take a pair of separate hot and cold taps. Three holes suit a three-piece mixer, like our traditional Clarice, with the spout in the centre and a lever on either side. If there are no holes at all, the sink was designed for a tall basin tap or a wall mounted tap. Our bathroom taps buying guide explains each option in more detail.

Should I choose modern or traditional bathroom taps?

Look at the shapes in the rest of the room. Modern bathroom taps keep things crisp, with straight lines, slim spouts, and a single lever, such as our square-edged Concept or softly rounded Poma. Traditional bathroom taps bring character through curved swan spouts, crosshead handles, and ceramic details, and our Chester and Clarice designs look perfectly at home beside a pedestal sink or roll top bath. Whichever style you choose, matching your sink and bath taps gives the room a polished, cohesive finish.

Which tap finish should I choose?

Chrome bathroom taps are bright, hard-wearing, and the easiest finish to match with existing accessories. Black bathroom taps add definition and look wonderful against white ceramic and pale stone tiles. Gold bathroom taps in brushed brass bring warmth and a softer glow, especially alongside wood-toned furniture or deep green walls. For the most polished result, carry the same finish through to your shower, towel rail, and accessories.

What water pressure do I need for a bathroom tap?

It’s worth checking before you buy, as some modern taps need a minimum level of water pressure to perform at their best. If you have a combi boiler or a mains pressure system, most taps will work beautifully. If your home has a gravity-fed system with a cold water tank in the loft, the pressure is likely to be lower, so look for taps suitable for low pressure. Each product page lists the minimum pressure required, and our team is always happy to help if you’re unsure.

Do bathroom taps come with a waste?

Many of our basin mixers, including the Slade, Sidaw, and Virgo, come with a click-clack waste included, which you simply press to open and close. Tall basin taps and wall mounted designs are usually sold without one, so you can choose a waste to suit your sink. The product title will tell you which is which, and you’ll find matching options in our bathroom wastes and traps.

Can I fit bathroom taps myself?

Swapping a basin or bath tap like for like is a manageable job if you’re comfortable with basic plumbing. Turn off the water supply, disconnect the old tap, and fit the new one using flexible tap connectors, checking every joint is watertight before turning the water back on. Wall mounted and freestanding taps are a bigger project, as their pipework needs to be hidden in the wall or floor, so they’re best fitted by a plumber, ideally as part of a wider renovation.
